St. Louis Cardinals
It seemed like the Cardinals were looking past this season but they are definitely still in the race. Matt Carpenter was red hot in July and through just a week in August he has been even better. They might not have the most recognizable lineup but the Cards can score.

They can also pitch. John Gant is not a rookie but he is still developing in the Majors. He walks a few too many but he does not give up a lot of hits which seems to be a trend with a lot of young pitchers. His homer rate is decent so he is not getting burned too much.
Miami Marlins
Miami was a big ahead of the Mets for a little while but they have sunk back down to last place…where they belong. It doesn’t really matter I suppose as neither team is any good and both teams struggle to score. In 8 of their last 10 they scored three runs or less.

Rookie Trevor Richards has been hot over his last four starts, just 2ER combined. He is showing that the Marlins might have a building block even though his record in just 3-6. Getting enough support is going to be a challenge though and that includes a bullpen which is just OK.
