The Cardinals and Dodgers will be finishing up a series on Sunday afternoon from Dodger Stadium.
Adam Wainwright vs. Michael Grove is the expected pitching matchup in this contest.
As expected, Los Angeles is the favorite at home in this spot, but it is nothing all that heavy. There has been a drop in the total from 9.5 to 9 for the moment.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals were unable to follow up their 11-0 win on Friday over the Dodgers with another win on Saturday as they dropped to them by a score of 6-2.
For as much success as they were able to have against Andrew Heaney & co. in the opener, the same was not true in game two as the offense really did not have a ton of answers for Clayton Kershaw or the relievers.
St. Louis was able to scratch together seven hits on Saturday, but they just were never able to get into any real rhythm which is something that will have to change for them in the finale on Sunday.
As far as the pitching was concerned, it really was not all that great and that started with Jordan Montgomery who clearly did not have his best stuff out there.
Since joining the Cardinals, this lefty has pitched quite well, but he had an awfully hard time navigating through four innings of work against a very tricky offense.
While he was out there, he allowed seven hits and six runs while walking a batter and striking out three. Quite simply, there were just too many pitches that were not located well and the Dodgers made him pay for it.
Although they clearly did not play their best brand of baseball, the Cards have a good opportunity on Sunday to earn the series victory over the best team in the sport and they definitely have the right starting pitcher in order to do so.
Adam Wainwright will certainly have a big challenge ahead of him in this one, but he definitely has the capability of having success here. He is no longer about overpowering batters, but he has done a very good job of mixing speeds and locations while keeping hitters off balance which he will have to keep up against Los Angeles in order to contain them.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers did a good job of responding on Saturday with a 6-2 win after they got blanked in what was an embarrassing game for them in the opener.
Something this team has been so good at all season long is being able to bounce back and they did a nice job of that in their last win with strong pitching and hitting.
Los Angeles was able to record nine hits in their last victory and a bulk of those hits came off of Jordan Montgomery who was not missing a ton of bats.
I really liked the approach this group was able to have against a tough customer like that as they consistently put together good at-bats against him.
In their last win, both Will Smith and Cody Bellinger were able to pick up multi-hit games while plenty of other people contributed as well. The offense did not do much from the fifth inning on, but they had already done the damage they needed to secure the win.
Clayton Kershaw once again delivered for these guys as he allowed two runs in six innings of work while punching out seven batters. He did allow seven hits to St. Louis but did a really good job of limiting the damage against them.
Not that the Dodgers have anything else to prove in the regular season, but being able to win a series against a team they could see in October would be nice for them, especially when facing a very tricky opposing pitcher in Adam Wainwright.
Getting the start in the finale is Michale Grove who does not have a decision on the season yet. He has looked solid in his starts so far, but he has not given his team great length which is a little concerning. Even in a different era of baseball, teams are going to need their starters to give more than five innings of work.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cardinals are 7-1 in their last 8 Sunday games.
- The Cardinals are 14-2 in their last 16 during game 3 of a series.
- The Dodgers are 42-11 in their last 53 games when their opponent scores 2 runs or less in their previous game.
- The Dodgers are 60-19 in their last 79 overall.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Dodgers MLB Prediction:
The Dodgers are the better team, but I do not see this being an easy game for them on Sunday.
Despite not being more talented as a whole, the Cardinals do have the advantage in terms of starting pitcher here which I think will help them a lot in this spot.
I have liked what I have seen from Groves at times, but I can definitely see St. Louis doing enough against him to keep this game close.
Wainwright might not be totally dominant, but he has the ability to pitch solid and have his team in it at the end.
