The Cardinals will be in Chicago to play game four of their game five-game series on Wednesday evening.
Miles Mikolas will get the nod for St. Louis and Luke Farrell will be going for Chicago.
In this spot, the road team is a very big favorite which is hard to argue with. There is clearly a big gap between these two teams.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals have now taken two of three so far in this series after they took the opener on Monday and then split a pair of games on Tuesday.
In game 2 of this series, the offense was nonexistent for these guys, but they bounced back in a big way in the next one as they exploded for 13 runs in the victory.
Overall, they were able to record 16 hits in that contest and a lot of different people helped out. Corey Dickerson had four hits in the game and Nolan Arenado had three. They did exactly what they had to do against a pitching staff that has had its struggles this season.
Adam Wainwright tossed six innings and allowed two hits and punched out three batters in the first game of the doubleheader. He was once again effective out there but did not have anything to show for it.
In the 13-run frenzy, Jake Woodford also put forth a solid performance and he did a good job of pitching to contact. He ended up going 5.1 innings while allowing one earned run and punching out one batter.
They might not be getting a lot of talk nationally, but St. Louis has been an impressive team for a while and they now lead the Brewers by 5.5 games in the NL Central. I have a hard time seeing a scenario where they do not win that division.
Miles Mikolas will get the ball in this game and he has been impressive this season. He is coming off of a very strong outing against the Diamondbacks and he certainly has the ability to have similar results in this one.
So far, the Red Birds have pretty much done what they have needed to do in this series. Even with the lead they have in their division, these are not the types of games they can take for granted and let up in.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs were competitive in the first two games of this series and even picked up a win, but they looked a lot more like themselves in the 13-3 loss on Tuesday.
It was only a matter of time before the Cardinals exposed their pitching in this series and they really poured it one in that one.
Starter Adrian Sampson got rocked hard as he allowed eight hits and five earned runs in just 3.1 innings of work. Also, he did not record a single strikeout which does not come as that much of a surprise.
After he departed the game, the bullpen was not all that much better. That has happened too many times this season for this group where the starter does not do his job and the relievers make it worse by not doing what they have to do.
Anderon Espinoza allowed four earned runs in three innings of work and Steven Brault did not even go an inning and allowed three earned runs.
Chicago knows the pitching for them is simply not good enough, but they really do not do a whole lot about it. They can keep sending these guys out there, but we know that is not going to get them where they want to get.
The fact that they were able to shut out the Cardinals is surprising to me, frankly. If things go how a lot of people think they will, these final two games could be pretty bad on that side of the field for them.
Luke Farrell gets the ball in this one and I did a double take when I saw the probables and he was listed to pitch. He really is a guy that a lot of people forgot about and really had no idea where he was.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Cardinals are 6-0 in their last 6 games when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Cardinals are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. a team with a losing record.
- The Cubs are 14-38 in their last 52 home games vs. a team with a winning record.
- The Cubs are 1-5 in their last 6 during game 4 of a series.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs MLB Prediction:
The Cardinals did not do much offensively in the first couple of games, but they did a good job of bouncing back in game 3 and I can see them doing more of that in this one.
Really, the only way I could see Farrell being effective against them is because of the surprise element, but I do not buy that one. St. Louis knows he is a very hittable arm and I expect them to get to him and a flawed bullpen.
If Mikolas is on his game, he should be able to handle these hitters and help his team get the win.
I like the Cards laying the runs on the road.
