St. Louis Cardinals
Miles Mikolas only lasted four innings in St. Louis’ 3–1 loss on Friday, in the first of three games at Wrigley Field. That meant the bullpen had to do some heavier lifting but the Cardinals were already down in the game so none of the key guys had to throw.
That said, Giovanny Gallegos, Ryan Helsley, and Tyler Webb combined to throw four shutout innings. Perhaps I should rethink who the “key” guys are out of the St. Louis bullpen, which has been less than spectacular this year.

Jack Flaherty, along with Dakota Hudson, both of whom got off to rough starts this season, are the only two starting pitchers on the roster with an ERA+ better than the league’s average. Flaherty’s WHIP (1.14) stands out as the best on the staff, though. He’s also striking out, by far, the most batters and conceding only more walks than Mikolas, who is among the league leaders.

Guess who closed out the Cubs’ 3–1 win over St. Louis on Friday night?
It wasn’t Craig Kimbrel. Instead, Pedro Strop returned after nursing a sore hamstring for a month and shut it down in the ninth. He and Steve Cishek will be valuable guys in the late innings when Kimbrel is ready to go.

So when will the new $43 million (over three years) closer who was the youngest pitcher ever to record 300 career saves be ready to join the Cubs?
The plan isn’t fit to a tee but Chicago will send him to Arizona for at least a week after Kimbrel throws bullpen at Wrigley Field on Saturday. From there, he’ll got to Triple-A and I can’t imagine it will be much longer from there, provided everything goes on smoothly. I would bet on seeing Kimbrel throw in a regular season game sometime this month.
