St. Louis Cardinals
The Redbirds lost their rubber match in Philadelphia Sunday, 4–0.
Zack Wheeler lowered his ERA to 2.66 with seven shutout innings.
Adam Wainwright raised his to 3.26 with four earned runs in 5.2 innings. He allowed eight hits, including a home run each to Rhys Hoskins and JT Realmuto.
Dakota Hudson will start for St. Louis in Atlanta on Monday.
He threw 174 innings as a rookie in 2019 but just short of 50 in the next two seasons, combined.
So Hudson’s 15 starts this season are already easily the second-most in a season of his career.
He’s still walking four batters per nine innings with a rate only slightly better than his career mark. Forty-four strikeouts to 36 walks won’t win you plaudits with many numbers-crunchers.
Keeping the ball in the yard in more than two-thirds of his starts this season will, however.
Hudson gave up two home runs in St. Louis his first time out this season. The four he’s given up since have all come on the road.
He’s alternated wins and a losses for four straight starts. Last time out, he beat the Marlins, 5–3.
Atlanta Braves
Atlanta got a great start from Charlie Morton Sunday but its bullpen gave up three in the eighth and one in the ninth to lose, 4–3, in Cincinnati.
Morton gave up one hit, one walk, and struck out 10 seven before turning it over to Collin McHugh in the eighth.
He gave up four consecutive hits to Albert Almora, Nick Senzel, Matt Reynolds, and Brandon Drury, which produced three runs and the lead for Cincinnati.
Marcell Ozuna led off the top of the ninth against Hunter Strickland with his second home run of the game and, with two out, Michael Harris tied it at three with the Braves’ third solo home run.
AJ Minter gave up a leadoff hit to Tommy Pham and promptly picked him off. An error by Dansby Swanson on the catch from the throw by the first baseman made Pham safe at second.
Cincinnati promptly loaded the bases and Almora wound up being the hero with a single through the left side for the walk-off winner.
Kyle Wright has started as many games this season for Atlanta as Dakota Hudson has for St. Louis.
He’s also only given up six homers all season but in a dozen extra innings (92).
Wright walks a batter less per nine innings than Hudson and has superior strikeout numbers.
Monday he bids for his tenth victory.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
Neither starting pitcher is particularly festive when it comes to fireworks.
Wright is better positioned to keep the ball on the right side of the fence than Hudson going against the power of Atlanta.
The home team has the preferable spot without any Sunday travel. It will give the spectators something to cheer on the Fourth.
