The Mariners will be in Toronto to take on the Blue Jays on Tuesday, May 17th.
Game time is set for 7:07 ET in this game.
Logan Gilbert will be opposed by fellow right-hander Jose Berrios on Tuesday.
The Mariners really did start off the year strong but things have certainly begun to even out. They are not playing at that level at the moment.
No matter how good of a start a team gets off to, they will usually come back to Earth a little but they have done more than that. Now, they have fallen below .500 and do not appear to be playing their best baseball.
It was a really good sign for this crew to take 2 of 3 games from the Mets this weekend. Still, fans would love to see them playing more consistently right about now.
Seattle knew this series with Toronto was going to be a tricky one even though they have underperformed thus far. Facing that team on the road is hardly ever an easy task.
In the opener on Monday, Toronto took them down by a score of 6-2. It was close for a while but the M’s just did not have many answers.
Former Mariner Yusei Kikuchi pitched very well against his old club on Monday, as they really had no answers for him. It is hard to win ball games when you do not give much run support.
Chris Flexen went 5.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs in the loss on Monday. I thought he did pretty good navigating through that lineup but still did not get the intended result.
Logan Gilbert will get the ball in game 2 and the M’s should feel very optimistic with their chances in this one. He has been excellent this season and he currently holds a record of 4-1 with an ERA of 2.13.
Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays have been decent this season but certainly have been nothing special. Their play has not matched up with the lofty expectations given to them before the season.
With all of that said, I still feel they are a very talented club and a dangerous one but I am not sure they are a team that is feared. People acknowledge their talent and potential but also feel like they could be had by someone who matches up well with them.
In past seasons, a record of 19-17 would not make anyone think twice, but this year is different for this group. It is important to remember the narrative surrounding them heading into the season and then during it.
Toronto was the betting favorite to win the AL East, which has not happened in some time. A lot of the pundits were very high on them and some picked them to win the World Series.
Bottom line, when people start to realize how good you can be, expectations begin to form, and often they are high. However, when you do not meet or exceed them, there is certainly room for deserved criticism.
Toronto certainly did not play their best baseball over the weekend with the Rays but they did start off the series with the Mariners the way they hoped.
Kikuchi finished the day going 6 innings, not allowing an earned run, and striking out 6 batters. That kind of production from him is certainly a good sign for them.
Jose Berrios is on the mound for this club and quite frankly, he has not been very good this year. He is 2-2 with an ERA of 5.82. He has struggled with giving his team length, walks, timely hits, etc.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mariners are 4-12 in their last 16 games as a dog.
- The Mariners are 5-14 in their last 19 games.
- The Blue Jays are 13-4 in their last 17 games against the AL West.
- The Blue Jays are 14-6 in their last 20 games.
Seattle Mariners vs. Toronto Blue Jays MLB Prediction:
The Blue Jays did what they needed to do in game 1 and will look to carry that over. They are at the point where they have to string together victories.
Even though Berrios has not been vintage, I still feel he can be effective against the M’s. I also feel Gilbert can give a solid outing and keep his team in it.
To me, this is a game that shapes out to be a close one but I trust the Jays more here. Once the game goes into the hands of the bullpen, I feel more confident in the better team with the more explosive lineup.
The juice is not out of control, so give me the Jays ML.
