AL West action sees the Mariners visiting the Angels for the first game of their series on Monday evening.
The pitching matchup ought to make for a very good one as Luis Castillo will be battling Shohei Ohtani.
Depending on where you look, it will vary but I have seen a lot of spots list this as a pick ’em. The total has dipped to 6 in some spots.
Seattle Mariners
The Mariners took care of business in the opener with the Rangers, but they dropped the next two which is pretty disappointing for them to say the least.
Their last series was a good example of one they should have been able to do damage in, but they played down to their competition. It is certainly nothing to get nervous over, but it is something to take note of.
Logan Gilbert started the game and he went six innings and allowed three earned runs while walking four and punching out five. He did not have his best stuff, but he gave his team a chance to compete and was a helluva lot better than he was last time out when he got smoked by the Yankees.
In the two games that Seattle lost in this series, their offense was not all that great. On Sunday, they faced a tough customer in Martin Perez and they did not have a ton of answers for him as he allowed just one earned run in six innings.
Throughout the course of the season, the bullpen for this team has been quite good, but Matt Brash did not get the job done last time out as he allowed two hits and two earned runs in 2/3 of an inning.
Don’t get me wrong, Seattle had chances on Saturday and Sunday to get victories, but they just did not come through when they really needed to in some key spots.
The M’s will look to bounce back when they are in Anaheim starting on Monday. When you look at their opponent, they should do well against them, but having success when Mr. Ohtani is on the mound is never easy.
Luis Castillo will open things up in this series and he has been as advertised so far since putting on a Seattle uniform. It is hard to knock what he has done with his new team.
LA Angels
The Angels got blanked in the opener of their last series with the Twins, but they bounced back and won the next two games to earn the series victory.
In the 4-2 win on Sunday, newly acquired Tucker Davidson went six innings and allowed just two earned runs. He did not have high strikeout numbers, but he did a good job of pitching to contact and trusting his defense.
It certainly was not an offensive frenzy for Los Angeles in the finale, but they did enough in order to get the win. They would have liked to score more runs with the eight hits, but they will take just about anything at this point.
The Halos were able to get three runs off of Chris Archer and then one more off of Michael Fulmer. Based on how this team has pitched for the majority of the season, there have not been a ton of times where they have been able to win games by scoring four runs.
Although their season has been buried for a long time now, being able to win a series against a team like the Twins is some sort of step in the right direction for them. It is not as if Minnesota is some great team, but they were still a test for this group and they handled it pretty well.
Now, they will look to keep it up when they have to host a tough Mariners team starting on Monday where they will have to elevate their game in order to have success.
With Ohtani on the mound, the Angels always feel like they have a chance to win, and for good reason. He is once again been impressive on that side of the field and he is coming off a good start against the A’s where he went six scoreless innings.
A day before he gets the start against the M’s, the two-way sensation picked up two walks and an RBI in the win over the Twins.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Mariners are 6-1 in their last 7 after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Mariners are 22-7 in their last 29 vs. a team with a losing record.
- The Angels are 7-19 in their last 26 during game 1 of a series.
- The Angels are 7-22 in their last 29 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
Seattle Mariners vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
Whenever these two guys are going against each other, it should make for a good one.
I would expect both of these starters to be solid, but I still trust Seattle more when the game gets into the late innings.
As it gets into the hands of the bullpen, I look for the M’s to be sharp, but I am not sold on LA totally containing them.
Give me the Mariners @ -110.
