The Giants will be on the road to take on the Nationals on Saturday, April 23rd.
Alex Wood will be going for the Giants and there has not been an announcement about the starter for the Nationals yet.
Game time is set for just after 1:00 ET from Nationals Park.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants have certainly started off the year in a strong way. That really should not surprise anyone.
After they had a very strong campaign last season the expectations are certainly very high for them this year. It will be hard to have another season in which they win 100+ games but it is very realistic to feel that they can be solid in 2022.
Although they have a good record, San Francisco still sits in 4th place in the NL West. It can seem a little hard to imagine that a team that is 8-5 is in that place, but as we all know, that division is quite talented and is going to be very competitive as the year goes on.
Before this series with the Nationals, the Giants lost three games out of four against the New York Mets and did not look all that good. I know the season is still very young but it would have been nice to see them perform a little better against one of the better teams in baseball.
They did sneak in a win over the Mets on Wednesday, but that was the exception of the series. In every other game, it was clear who the better team was.
In their series finale loss to New York, Anthony DeSclafani went 5 innings and allowed 5 earned runs. With a pitcher of that level, you expect more from him, even though he was going up against a very tough lineup.
Alex Wood will get the ball in this afternoon tilt on Saturday and will look to keep up his strong pitching. So far, he is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.93.
After a really tough series for the Giants this week, this is one against the Nats where they really have to take care of their business in.
Washington Nationals
Unlike their opponent, it certainly has not been a start to write home about for the Nationals. They are going to be in for a very, very long season.
No matter who you talked to around the league, nobody seemed to think that it would be all that great of a season for this club. Even the most optimistic of fans knew that it would be a very tall order for them to have much success this season.
This is a team that does have some young talent, but it is going to take time for them to develop. I have a very hard time seeing them being all that relevant in the near future.
Given the kind of division they play in, it seems like it is very possible they will finish in last place for years to come unless they make some serious changes to their roster and other teams get worse.
Washington just split a four-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks. It is hard to take much from that series because it featured two of the worst teams in baseball.
Arizona beat them in the finale of the series by a score of 4-3. In the last two games of that series, the snakes outscored them by a 15-5 margin.
In their last loss, Josh Rogers went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. The bullpen did their job after he left but that did not matter as the damage was already done.
At the moment, there is no official word on the starter for Saturday. I have seen a report that it could be Paolo Espino, but that is not a lock at the moment.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Giants are 41-12 SU in their last 53 games as the favorite.
- The Giants are 12-4 SU in their last 16 games against the NL East.
- The Nationals are 18-37 SU in their last 55 Saturday games.
- The Nationals are 19-44 SU in their last 63 games as the home underdog.
San Francisco Giants vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction:
This is a game where I see the Giants just being too much for the Nationals to handle.
I look for Alex Wood to keep up his good pitching and for San Francisco to hit around whoever ends up starting for Washington and to get into their bullpen.
SF should be able to get off to a good start and never look back on Saturday.
My play is on the Giants laying the 1.5 runs here.
