San Francisco Giants
Drew Pomeranz has twice gone five innings this season and twice gone four (plus). He hasn’t been terrible, either, giving up exactly two runs in three of those four starts.
Still, he doesn’t have a win to show for it, though the Giants have won two of his four starts. Overall, San Fran has to be middle pleased with what it’s got out of Pomeranz thus far, considering the rather low expectations coming into the season.
San Fran had Monday off and will play Tuesday/Wednesday in Toronto before getting Thursday off, too, to return home for a series with the Yankees.
Brandon Belt is the only regular with an OPS above league-average and it’s just barely there. Steven Duggar’s .242 batting average leads the team of regulars.
Toronto Blue Jays
Toronto swept Oakland over the weekend and ran its winning streak to four games. Suddenly, it’s 11–12 with Baltimore in its rearview mirror.
It wasn’t all good news out of Oakland, though. Matt Shoemaker tore his ACL over the weekend and is done for the season. He was off to a fine start for the Blue Jays in his first season with the team.
All the more important Clay Buchholz becomes. He’s thrown just short of eleven innings in two starts for Toronto this season with an ERA of 3.38. He’s pitched to contact thus far, walking just three and striking out six.
Toronto’s pitching was looking pretty good with Shoemaker in the mix. It can still survive if Marcus Stroman continues to pitching like a Cy Young and both Aaron Sanchez and Buchholz stay healthy. Those feel like “ifs” that are a little too big, though. I don’t see things holding up all year in the rotation.
