The Giants and Padres will be meeting up for the first of three on Monday evening from Petco Park.
Two lefties will be going at it as Alex Wood will be opposed by Blake Snell here.
San Diego is a pretty significant favorite at home in this spot. The total opened at 7 and is now up to 7.5.
San Francisco Giants
It has been well noted that the Giants have not played all that well this season, but they are coming off taking a two-game set from the A’s and they will look to build off of that starting on Monday. It certainly does not solve all their problems, but they are at a point in their season where they will take anything they can get.
After picking up the 7-3 win on Saturday, things were a little closer on Sunday with a 6-4 win, but they still did what they had to do against a team that simply is not very good.
Logan Webb got hit very hard in his previous start against the Dodgers, but he was much smoother and more effective in the win on Sunday vs. Oakland.
The right-hander went seven innings and allowed four hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters. He was not exactly lighting up the radar gun, but he did a good job of navigating through their lineup which is all he needed to do.
Dominic Leone was only able to go 0.1 innings and he allowed three hits and two earned runs which did give the A’s some life, but it was not enough in the end.
Mike Yastrzemski had himself a good day at the plate as he homered two times in the game. He has not been extremely powerful this season so that was definitely a good sign for him and his team.
Thairo Estrada was also able to produce on offense as he hit a two-run home run off of AJ Puk in the sixth inning.
Alex Wood will get the start in the opener and he will have to be better than what he did in his last start where he allowed nine hits and six earned runs against the Dodgers. He is a guy that had fairly high expectations for 2022 but has not been overly impressive to this point.
San Diego Padres
The Padres went into their last series with the Dodgers with even higher hopes than normal given the kind of moves they made at the deadline. After three games, it was still more of the same and it was clear that Los Angeles still owns them.
Games one and two were not close at all and game three was closer, but there were a ton of times where you thought the Padres were really going to get it done. Holding a team like the Dodgers to four runs is fine, but it is hard to win a game when you do not score at all.
Even with their potent offense, San Diego did not have any answers for Tyler Anderson on Sunday, and frankly, that was a theme for the whole series because they did not do much against Gonsolin or Heaney either.
Not only was this most recent series for the Friars a gut punch, but it was also a reality check. Just because they bolstered their team and got a lot of people talking about their World Series potential, they are still not on the same level as the Dodgers until they can prove otherwise and I would not necessarily bank on that one happening.
After the sweep at the hands of their rival, this group holds a record of 61-50, and they trail LA by 15.5 games. For now, they would be the last team to make it to the playoffs with the expanded format, but there is no guarantee that will be the case by the time the season is over.
In their loss on Sunday, Yu Darvish was effective as he went six innings and allowed two earned runs while punching out five. The Dodgers did scatter seven hits off of him, but he did a good job of limiting the damage. Luis Garcia allowed three hits and two earned runs in one inning of work which really sealed the game for LA.
As if scoring no runs is not bad enough, the worse part of what the Padres did on Sunday night is only being able to get two hits. I get their opponent has good pitching, but there is no excuse to get that little production from an offense that has the talent and capability that this unit has.
Blake Snell will get the ball here and the reality with him is he is no longer the same guy he was in Tampa. He might pitch well in bursts, but the days of him being truly dominant are gone.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Giants are 4-9 in their last 13 after scoring 5 or more in their previous game.
- The Giants are 2-8 in their last 10 during game 1 of a series.
- The Padres are 5-1 in their last 6 home games.
- The Padres are 4-1 in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing record.
San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The Padres really could not have played much worse in their last series, but I do like them to open up things well in this one.
Despite having some success in their last series, the Giants are still not a team I trust a lot. I do not view them as a squad that will carry over their good play into the next game.
Neither starter has been great here, but trust Snell and the bullpen in this spot more than Wood & co. After going very quiet in their last three, I feel this is a good opportunity for the San Diego bats to really get going against a guy they can certainly hit around the park.
There is no doubt it is heavy, but I like the Padres on the Moneyline in this spot.
