The Giants and Padres will be finishing up their series on Wednesday afternoon from Petco Park.
San Diego is not a huge favorite in this one, but they are still laying a good size price at home. There has not been a lot of movement from the opening total of 8.5.
Jakob Junis and Sean Manaea are the opposing starters in this ball game.
San Francisco Giants
A day after the Giants were able to take a close one, they fell to the Padres by a 7-4 margin on Tuesday.
Looking back at this one, it was definitely a game they could have won, but their opponent just had too many answers in the end.
Alex Cobb started their last game and he went five innings and allowed three earned runs while striking out six and scattering around seven hits. Given the kind of offense he had to go up against, I thought he was solid out there.
The first two relievers that were used for San Francisco were fine, but the following two just were unable to get the job done when called upon.
Dominic Leone allowed two hits and one earned run in the eighth inning and Tyler Rogers allowed two hits and two earned runs in the ninth. When the Giants bring in those kinds of arms, those are the things that cannot happen.
In the loss on Tuesday, both Tommy La Stella and Thairo Estrada picked up two hits. On the night, the team had a total of nine hits which proved to not be enough.
With each team taking one game in this series, it is going to be critical for the Giants to take care of business on Wednesday and earn the series win. Given the kind of season they have had so far, it would not be a good look if they dropped this one with every game meaning so much.
Jakob Junis will get the ball in the finale and he has been pretty effective for this team in 2022. He does not always go long into games, but he has often delivered when he has been out there. With his last start coming against the Dodgers, he will once again be faced with a challenge when facing this order for San Diego.
San Diego Padres
The bats for the Padres went quiet in the first game of this series, but they really were able to get going in the second game and were able to win a game that was full of drama.
As it has been well noted regarding this team, they have not exactly played great since bolstering their roster at the deadline so a victory like this over their divisional rival is a good sign and they hope there is more of that to come for the remainder of the season.
Manny Machado was right in the middle of all the excitement that took place at the end of the game as he hit a three-run home run off of Tyler Rogers to end it. In spots like those, the Friars want their big-time players up to the plate and he delivered just like he has so many other times before.
Look, a game-ending homer is always a big deal, but I thought it was even more so the case in this game when you consider what happened the inning prior. Josh Hader had previously blown the save when the Giants batted in the 9th as he allowed three runs to tie the game.
With some other teams, it would be hard to have confidence in them winning a game after a blown save, but that is not the case with this group given how dynamic their offense is.
Joe Musgrove kept up his strong pitching on Tuesday as he fired seven innings and allowed just one earned run on six hits. He was also able to record four strikeouts in the decision.
Being able to pick up the series win for San Diego would be a good step in the right direction for them. Their opponent might not be playing great this season, but they are certainly a team that is never easy to take down.
Sean Manaea will be getting the ball in the finale and he has been up and down in 2022. He is coming off a bad outing against the Dodgers where he allowed ten hits and eight runs in just four innings.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Giants are 6-13 in their last 19 games overall.
- The Giants are 5-14 in their last 19 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
- The Padres are 6-1 in their last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Padres are 19-9 in their last 28 games when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.
San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
After what was a truly exciting victory on Tuesday, I do expect the Padres to once again get the job done in this one, but I do not see it being an easy one for them.
It is clear there is a lot of upside with Manaea, but I would not say he has been all that impressive this season. I trust the offense for San Diego in this spot more than I trust him.
With Junis on the mound, I think the righty can be effective to a point, but the Padres will eventually be too much for him and the bullpen to handle.
It would not surprise me if San Diego won outright, but I like San Francisco getting the runs on the road.
