San Francisco Giants
The Giants have been decent this season but I think a lot of people thought they would be a lot better than they have been. Of course, they could improve as the season goes on but there is no guarantee of that.
When you look at what they did a year ago, there was a lot of hope that this group would do more of the same this season. For as good as 2021 was, that kind of winning is simply not realistic every season and that is certainly being put on display.
When it comes to this team, I still feel they can be very good this season even if they do not come near the record books. Just because a team does not win over 100 games does not mean they did not have success.
As I look at this ball club, I certainly see a team that is talented. I like the hitters they have and the approach they have at the plate and I also am impressed with their starters and relievers.
Based on talent alone, they do not have as much as the Dodgers or Mets but that does not mean they could not compete with and potentially beat some top teams. If I were a Giants fan, I would fear what happened to them last postseason when LA proved to just be too much for them.
I feel for the 2022 season, San Francisco is really going to have to take advantage of the expanded playoffs because I have a very hard time seeing them winning the NL West or even being in 2nd place. Right now, it is clear that the Padres and Dodgers are better than they are and I do not see that changing a whole lot.
The series they have with Philadelphia is one in which they will have to get back on track because what they did over the weekend with the Reds was unacceptable. Simply put, you just cannot drop a series to one of the worst teams in the sport.
Alex Cobb put forth a strong effort in the finale with the Reds and Logan Webb will look to do the same on Monday. Whenever this guy is on the mound, the Giants should feel good about their chances of winning.
Philadelphia Phillies
Boy, what an absolute trainwreck the Phillies have been this season. Some would say that is too critical but that is the reality.
What you are seeing from this team on a nightly basis is just more of the same. If you are a fan of this ball club, their level of play should not surprise you.
It has been a common theme for some time now that the Phillies will have a lot of expectations and have a ton of hype surrounding them but they end up flopping.
If you listened to the media and some of the talking heads in the pre-season, you would have thought this was some perfect team. As always, they talked them up and failed to point out all of their deficiencies.
Look, I get that their offense is a very good one and they will score a lot of runs during the season. However, that aspect is just one small piece of the puzzle and does not tell the whole story.
The reality of this team right now is they are very lacking in the pitching department and it is evident especially when they face off with teams that have the ability to expose that. And I am not just talking about their bullpen.
Baseball fans in general have to do a better job of not glorifying their rotation because it really is an average to below-average one. You hear tons of praise about Wheeler and Nola but if you think those two are true aces and top of the rotation guys on a title team you are mistaken.
They are good starters but they have still proven to be inconsistent. And do not even get me started with some of their other starters. Gibson, Eflin, Suarez? Really? Good luck winning a whole lot with that staff.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Giants are 15-5 in their last 20 Monday games.
- The Giants are 40-15 in their last 55 games vs. a team with a losing record.
- The Phillies are 3-8 in their last 11 Monday games.
- The Phillies are 2-5 in their last 7 games as a home dog.
San Francisco Giants vs. Philadelphia Phillies MLB Prediction:
After the Giants played down to their competition in their last series, I look for them to be sharper here. It is imperative that they do so.
With Webb on the mound, I feel confident with San Fran. He is the better pitcher and although this is a tough lineup, he can certainly navigate through it.
Gibson might be able to keep his team in the game but I still feel he will get hit a little. And once they get into the pen of Philadelphia, I do not see that going so well for the home team.
Give me the Giants on the ML.
