NL West baseball sees the Giants and Dodgers finishing up their series from Dodger Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Alex Cobb vs. Clayton Kershaw is the expected pitching matchup for the finale between these two rivals.
As is the case a lot of the time, LA is a huge favorite at home. The total in this one opened at 8.5 and has since dropped to 7.5 across the board.
San Francisco Giants
Going into the season, I was pretty high on the Giants and was excited to see what they could potentially accomplish, but the bottom line is they have not been all that impressive in 2022.
In the earlier part of the season, the whole idea that they would eventually figure it out did make some sense, but it is hard for me to have that type of faith right about now. It is not to say they could not get stronger in the second half, but I would not bank on it.
With a few exceptions, I feel what teams are right about now is pretty much what they are going to be. As it relates to the Giants, I see them as a team that would really struggle to even get into the playoffs at the pace they are on now.
I never said they had to replicate what they did a year ago because that would have been virtually impossible, but they should be better than 2 games above .500. Given the type of players that are on this roster, that is a very fair expectation.
Going into the season, San Francisco thought they could at least compete for 1st in the NL West, but that has not been the case at all. Heading into this game, they trail the Dodgers by 15.5 games and are 3rd in the division. That is not at all what these guys had in mind for their 2022 campaign.
Speaking of the Dodgers, they have once again given San Francisco trouble this season and they have taken the first three games of this series. In those games, it has been very evident who the better and more complete team is.
In the 4-2 loss on Saturday, Alex Wood went 4 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. It would have been nice to see him give better length, but the big thing in that game was the lack of offense for the Giants. When facing an opponent of that caliber, it is hard to score that few runs and get the win.
Alex Cobb is next up in the rotation and he needs to pitch well in order to get his team at least one win in this series. He has shown glimpses of being good at times this season, but the consistency just has not been there.
LA Dodgers
The Dodgers just keep on playing a high level of baseball and it does not appear as if they are going to slow down. In fact, it would not shock me if they even got better as the season went on.
There was never really a time this season when I felt like they were playing badly, but I did feel there was, even more, they could show and they have been doing that of late.
For a while, they were playing well but not great. Now, I think they have hit that next level and I expect them to stay there.
Given the type of talent that is on this team, the way they have played, and the record they have is not surprising. That does not mean they couldn’t get better in certain areas, but it is hard not to be high on this group when the postseason starts.
When the Dodgers are really rolling, I view them as a team that is quite balanced. I have been impressed by both the pitching and offense, which I feel will continue to be the case.
Despite dealing with some injuries, I have mostly liked the way the rotation has been performed. There is no doubt they are going to need Buehler and some other key bullpen guys back to win it all, but they can get by for now and win the division with what they currently have.
Julio Urias went 6 innings and did not allow an earned run while punching out 5 batters in the win on Saturday. That was certainly a very encouraging sign for Dodger nation.
Clayton Kershaw gets the ball in this one and he has been quite good this season. The veteran left-hander comes into this game with a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 2.13.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Giants are 5-13 in their last 18 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Giants are 1-5 in their last 6 road games vs. a left-handed starter.
- The Dodgers are 40-11 in their last 51 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Dodgers are 42-18 in their last 60 games on grass.
San Francisco Giants vs. LA Dodgers MLB Prediction:
The Dodgers have asserted their dominance in the first three and they will look to keep that up here. They certainly have a good opportunity to do so.
In this spot, I see there being a decent amount of offense. I am not saying it is going to be a slugfest, but I do expect some runs.
I do not have a ton of confidence in Cobb here and although I expect Kershaw to be sharp, the Giants can at least get a few from him. Although talented, both bullpens have proven to be shaky at times this year.
My play is the over of 7.5 in this divisional contest.
