I know it seems like we just got started but by the end of the week, teams will have played a third of their season. Houston’s start has gone about as bad as could be and they need to start banking some wins.
San Francisco Giants
Whenever I see a TBD in the probable pitchers slot I always look to the game before to see if I can use that data to predict the next man up. As I write this on Monday afternoon the Giants have not decided who they are going to pitch on that day either. Needless to say this is not a strength of the team, advantage Houston…we think.
The Giants offense has been mediocre – 15th in runs scored. Oddly they are 7th in batting average at a terrible .244 which is a gross indictment on the state of the league right now. Almost all of the damage is being done by just a couple of bats, Yaz and Donovan Solano, who is hitting over .450. A couple of hot hitters does not a lineup make.
Houston Astros
Started with pitching for the Giants and will for the Astros too. Brendan Bielak got a couple of wins in relief to start the season and was sharp in his first MLB start, five shutout innings against Arizona. Given what we do know about Bielak there is some optimism there but the Astros bullpen is in really rough shape right now. Injuries have really killed that group.
While a promising new pitcher is great the Astros would love to get some more established players going, namely George Springer, Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve. All are hitting under .220 at the moment.
I have been predicting a breakout for a while now and been disappointed but these guys are too good for that not to come soon, right?

The only upside to Houston’s struggles is that we can get some pretty good values on a team that still might have one of the 5 best lineups in the league. Bielak is still pretty fresh to move a line but if the Astros hit he can add another win to his 2-0 start.
