San Diego Padres
There was a lot of buzz about the Padres early but their recent play has been less than inspiring. The question is which team are they going to be, the scrappy winners or a team that is still a few players away. They have lost five in a row heading into Monday.
The Padres are first in stolen bases and third in homers so the excitement is there. Now they just have to harness that into winning. Fernando Tatis Jr. is the most exciting player in the game right now. With Tommy Pham out there is much more on him right now.
The starting pitching has been struggling a little of late. They want Chris Paddack to be an ace but they do not really have a pitcher on their staff who can gut the team through a game. They need that, that’s what good teams do.
Texas Rangers
Texas had won seven of ten heading into Monday and that had snuck them up to .500 and a reasonable position in the standings. They are catching San Diego at the right time to continue their winning ways. Their statistical profile is not one of a .500 team.
The Rangers are just 28th in scoring. You have to pitch really well to turn that kind of meagre offense into regular winning. They can expect more from power source Joey Gallo but the rest of the lineup is pretty lame. On the mound they need more from the likes of starter Mike Minor. He was very sharp in his last start against the Mariners but only went four innings. They need more.
