The Padres and Cardinals will be finishing off their series on Wednesday afternoon.
Yu Darvish will be going against Dakota Hudson in this one.
San Diego is currently a small favorite on the road here. Right now, I am seeing a total of 8 across the board.
San Diego Padres
Overall, the Padres have played quite well this season. I have been very impressed by what they have been able to do so far.
Even though their best player has been sidelined for the entire season, I was still expecting a lot from this group and they have done just that. When this team is playing how they ought to be playing, they are awfully dangerous.
It was understood what they did a year ago was not good enough and this season had to be better. If they keep up what they have done, they will certainly be in the playoffs and could make some serious noise.
As we know, the NL is a very tricky league and there are plenty of good teams. Although San Diego is very good, I would still give the overall edge to the Mets and Dodgers.
Look, I am not saying it would be impossible for them to take down Los Angeles or New York in a series but it would be very difficult. At the present time, I feel those teams have more depth than San Diego and that would show during multiple games.
Even if you forget the league they play in and focus just on NL West, that is also brutal. The Dodgers currently lead it with a record of 33-16 and the Padres are in 2nd at 30-19. Of course, you cannot forget about the Giants who are never an easy out.
Despite having a very strong season, the struggle for San Diego against the Cardinals has kept up in this series so far. After dropping the first one by a score of 6-3 they dropped the next one 3-2. It might not be a big deal in the long term but it certainly would not be a good look if they were to lose all three to this St. Louis team.
Blake Snell went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs in their loss on Tuesday but the offense was not able to get going. Yu Darvish will look to keep up his strong pitching here and he will be hoping for some run support.
St. Louis Cardinals
The Cardinals have been solid for the whole season and they seem to be playing better of late.
Over the years, you have become so used to seeing this team be a model of consistency, and this year really has not been that much different.
Sure, they might not be playing on the level as some former St. Louis teams but they are still very much relevant and putting a good product out there more times than not.
This club is not the most talented in the league but they have still been able to play well with the people they have. That is not to say they are devoid of good players but they certainly could use a bat and an arm to be even more complete.
Going into the season, it was understood that it was going to be a two-team race between them and the Brewers for the Central and so far, that has played out.
The Red Birds have a record of 28-21 right now and trail the Brewers by 3 games. It will certainly be a tight race throughout the season but I would still give the edge to Milwaukee.
Through the first two games of the series, the Cards have used a similar model to secure victories over the Padres. The pitching has been strong and the offense has done what it needed to do.
Adam Wainwright looked excellent in the win on Tuesday, as he went 7 innings, did not allow an earned run and punched out 10 batters. Dakota Hudson will look for similar results in this one.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 0-4 in their last 4 Wednesday games.
- The Padres are 15-7 in their last 22 games as a favorite.
- The Cardinals are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. NL West.
- The Cardinals are 18-8 in their last 26 games after allowing 2 runs or fewer in the previous game.
San Diego Padres vs. St. Louis Cardinals MLB Prediction:
St. Louis has done just what you could have asked of them so far in the series and I do not expect them to go away here.
San Diego does have the starting pitcher advantage but Hudson is certainly more than capable and has shown that this season. Also, Darvish is not always the most trustworthy arm despite his numbers being pretty solid.
Overall, I just see this being a game that turns out to be close. For me, the runs are too much to lay with the Friars.
Give me the Cardinals on the Runline.
