NL West action sees the Padres on the road to take on the Giants beginning on Monday night.
The expected starters in this ball game are Mike Clevinger and Carlos Rodon.
As of right now, San Francisco is a small favorite at home in this one with a total sitting at 7 runs.
San Diego Padres
The Padres looked good in the first couple of games against the Royals, but that was certainly not the case on Sunday as they dropped 15-7 to Kansas City.
That is the kind of result that can take away from what they did in the previous two games. Sure, they won the series, but they are at a point in the season where they need every game they can get, and losing by that margin to that team is simply not acceptable.
Offensively, things were not all that bad for them in the finale, but the pitching really killed them and it gave them no shot at earning the win.
Sean Manaea, who really has not been all that impressive this season, got absolutely rocked on Sunday as he went just four innings while allowing ten hits and six runs.
This is a guy that was supposed to come to San Diego and make an impact on their team, but he simply has not lived up to expectations. He has pitched well at times, but it definitely has not happened enough.
In the losing effort, Manny Machado kept up his strong play as he recorded four hits and four RBI. When a team is able to get ten hits and seven runs against KC, they should be able to win which is part of what makes this loss for them so frustrating.
The Friars will now get a chance to face off with a divisional opponent they are better than, but it likely still will not be an easy series for them.
Mike Clevinger will get the ball on Monday and he is coming off of a solid start against the Guardians where he went six innings and allowed two runs. He has seen some mixed results in 2022, but there has been a lot to like from this righty so far and his team really needs him to be solid in a game like this.
San Francisco Giants
The Giants kept up their struggles in their last series with the Twins and they are a team that is totally lost at the moment and it does not appear as if they are going to get all that much better as the season goes on.
Coming into play, they are 2-8 in their last 10 ball games and they often have not been playing competitive baseball. This is a team that has quite a bit of flaws and they have been getting exposed regularly by their opponents.
Saturday was the only competitive game in their series with Minnesota, but they still dropped it by a score of 3-2. They lost the other games 9-0 and 8-3 which simply should not be happening.
Jakob Junis did not look very good in the loss on Sunday as he went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits to go along with only two punchouts.
For as bad as the pitching was for them in their last series, the offense also deserves a ton of the blame because they also did not step up at all against a pitching staff that is not overly impressive.
San Francisco scored just five runs in their last three games. It really would not have mattered what kind of pitching they got because it is almost impossible to win baseball games that way.
Things don’t just get easier for this team when they host the Padres starting on Monday. Sure, San Diego is not a perfect team, but they are a lot better than the Giants at the moment and will present them with a lot of challenges.
Carlos Rodon will be the starter in this one and he has mostly been as advertised in 2022. The left-hander pitched quite well against the Tigers last time out and will need to do that again when he takes on this very tricky offense.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 2-5 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series.
- The Padres are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Giants are 5-2 in their last 7 home games.
- The Giants are 0-4 in their last 4 overall.
San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants MLB Prediction:
Based on how they have been playing for a while now, it is very hard to back the Giants, but I trust them more in a spot like this.
Throughout the course of the season, a lot of the pitchers on the San Francisco staff have not been effective nor reliable, but that has not been the case with Rodon. He will have a lot on his plate, but he has the arsenal to keep an offense like San Diego in check.
With Clevinger on the hill for the Padres, it would not surprise me if he is also solid in this one, but I look for SF to get enough off of him and the pen to earn a close win.
Give me the Giants as a small favorite at home here.
