Two teams at opposite ends of the AL West will go toe-to-toe on Sunday as the LA Angels play the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum, in Oakland, California.
San Diego Padres
This should be a fun series between a couple of really good teams. San Diego made all of the right moves at the deadline and now they just have to use the rest of the season to bring all of the pieces together. They are only 1-1 since the deals though.
The Padres lineup is really good, tops in the league in scoring and that is even with Tommy Pham on the shelf. He was playing well for them and will be another “addition” when he gets healthy later this month. Fernando Tatis Jr. is tied for the league lead in homers and awesomeness.
Chris Paddack has a high ceiling but has been struggling with consistency. He did have his best outing the last time out with a season-high eight strikeouts. I like that trend line.
Oakland Athletics
Even though the A’s are having a really nice season I think they can actually be better. Their dynamic infield trio of Matt Chapman, Matt Olson and Marcus Semien are not really hitting to expectations.
Oakland did some minor additions at the deadline but not to the offense. Khris Davis used to be one of the most reliable sources of power in the league but he has really called off this season. He has just one home and is hitting under .200.
Another reason I think Oakland can be better is that they are not getting much from two slots in the rotation. Sean Manaea is one of those. He is second to last on the team in ERA but his last couple of starts have been better so perhaps he is coming around.

This is a tough call with value on both sides. My inclination is to fade the Padres a little bit in the short terms though as the values are likely to be inflated with all the attention they have been getting.
