San Diego Padres
The Padres have played some very good baseball this season and it does not appear as if they are going to slow down anytime soon.
To me, they have been very impressive and it is a good sign to see them play like this. Based on the players they have, we knew it was possible but they had to show it on a more consistent level.
Of course, there is still a long way to go in this season but what they have done so far is encouraging. Even though they are not currently leading their division, I still view them as one of the best in the NL. Their next goal has to be to overtake the Dodgers for 1st place in the West and remain there for the rest of the season.
San Diego comes into this game with a record of 32-21 and they trail Los Angles by 3 games. Needless to say, those head-to-head games with those two teams are going to be crucial.
As I look at this team, I like the balance that they have on both sides of the field. We all know what the offense is capable of but I have really liked what the pitching has done. There were times a year ago when that part of their game was unreliable but it has been trustworthy for the most part.
Another reason to feel encouraged by this group is the fact they have not had their best player in the lineup for the whole season. When Tatis gets back in there, he will only make a good offense even more dangerous.
After dropping the first one on Thursday, San Diego has won the next two and has not allowed a run in either one of those contests. Being able to shut out the Brewers again on Sunday might not be realistic but being able to win the series certainly is. It will be a tall order but this squad is up for it and boy, what a statement that would be.
MacKenzie Gore looked excellent in the win on Saturday, as he went 6 innings and did not allow an earned run. Mike Clevinger will now look to follow the same script when he gets the start in the final game on Sunday.
Milwaukee Brewers
Just like with the Padres, the Brewers have been an impressive team in the 2022 campaign.
Even though they are not on the level as a team like the Dodgers or the Mets, I would still put this group in the mix for one of the best teams in the NL.
With that said, for me to really put this team in the contender category, I feel they are going to have to acquire more talent on the offensive side of the field because what they have now is not enough.
Don’t get me wrong, it is not as if they have no talent on offense but it certainly is not great. I feel like if they were to get into a series with a team that has deep pitching in the playoffs, it could spell trouble for them.
In terms of the pitching side of things, I really like them there and it is clearly a strength of theirs. Their bullpen is strong and the rotation is one of the best in the sport. If they were to make a deep run, I feel it would be because of their hurlers and not so much their bats.
Even though they got the win in the opener, Milwaukee has dropped the next two games with the Friars have not looked too good in either of those efforts. That is going to have to change on Sunday if they want to walk away from the series at least feeling partially good.
Aaron Ashby went 6 innings and allowed 4 earned runs in their loss on Saturday. He gave his team a chance to win but it did not matter because the offense decided not to show up.
Eric Lauer will look to keep up his strong pitching in the game on Sunday. He comes into the game with a record of 5-1 and an ERA of 2.49. No matter how well he pitches, he will need to get more run support than was given in the previous two contests.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 5-0 in their last 5 Sunday games.
- The Padres are 6-0 in their last 6 during game 4 of a series.
- The Brewers are 1-4 in their last 5 games on grass.
- The Brewers are 0-4 in their last 4 games as a favorite.
San Diego Padres vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
After shutting down the Brewers in the last two games, I look for them to keep rolling here.
Clevinger does not have a ton of innings here but I trust him in this spot. If he has his pitch arsenal in full effect, containing this Milwaukee offense is certainly something he is capable of.
I know that Lauer has been sharp this season but I do see the Padres being able to do enough against him to get the job done.
I like San Diego getting + money on the road here.
