NL West baseball sees the Padres on the road to take on the Rockies starting on Monday evening.
It is not anything huge, but San Diego is a decent size favorite in this one on the road. The total opened at 9 and is now all the way up to 12.
Sean Manaea and Jose Urena are the starters in this contest.
San Diego Padres
For the most part, I have liked what I have seen from the Padres, but they simply have not played all that well lately and they need to get back on track.
This team was playing with a lot more rhythm and consistency just a little bit ago, but there is no question there has been less of both of those things for a while. It was understood they would eventually come back down a little, but it does not mean what has happened of late is ok.
In their last 10 games, they are 3-7 and they keep on losing ground in the NL West. Of course, it is not all about winning the division, but it at least seemed more realistic for them just a little while ago.
Given how well the Dodgers have been playing and the struggles for San Diego, the deficit is now 8 games and I would say it is almost impossible for the Friars to come back and win it. I am not saying something crazy could not happen, but I would not bank on it.
After starting off the series with the Giants in a good way, they dropped the remaining two games, which is pretty disappointing for them.
I was not expecting a sweep against San Francisco, but I really would have liked to see them earn the series win. Of course, they could have done so, but they just did not play good baseball in the final two games of the series.
Really, the worse game of the series came on Sunday to the tune of a 12-0 crushing at the hands of their rival. It is one thing to lose to the Giants, but to lose by that margin is just a very bad look and they better hope it was just a fluke type of thing.
Now, the Padres really have to get back on track when they hit the road for the mountains. When facing a team like this, they know what they need to do. Sean Manaea will get the ball in this one and he will look to get his record to.500 and lower that ERA a bit.
Colorado Rockies
As more of the season goes by, it is becoming more clear that the Rockies are still not a very good team and they have a lot of work if they wish to be one.
Based on talent, they are better than they have been in past seasons, but it is not as if their record is anything that jumps out at people.
Colorado is still a team that is in the lower tier of a very competitive division and it is going to take a lot for them to get even near the top in the future years.
They hold a record of 38-48 and trail the Dodgers by 18.5 games. For a very long time now, it has been understood that they would be nowhere near winning the division and there would still be a ton of baseball to be played.
Personally, I feel the term middler is being too generous to the Rockies. I would not put them in the bottom-feeder category, but they are still a below-average club that is still nowhere near truly competing for a title.
When you watch them play, it is very clear they need a lot of work on both sides of the field, but they likely will not do a ton about it. If they were able to at least improve their pitching, I could see them being more competitive, but if they stay put, I do not see a ton of change taking place.
In their last series, they were able to go into the desert and take 3 of 4 from the Diamondbacks, which is something they will try and build off. It was not as if they beat some great team, but Arizona is an improved club that is not an easy out.
Their next series with the Padres is going to be a very tricky one. They are facing a team that is clearly going to come in angry and Colorado will be countering with the immortal Jose Urena. Sure, he could go out there and surprise some folks, but the thought of him facing that lineup cannot make fans all that confident.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 22-9 in their last 31 games after allowing 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Padres are 4-10 in their last 14 games.
- The Rockies are 6-14 in their last 20 during game 1 of a series.
- The Rockies are 6-17 in their last 23 games following a win.
San Diego Padres vs. Colorado Rockies MLB Prediction:
The Padres have to use this series to get back on track and it would not shock me if they opened things up in a good way here.
In this spot, I just trust San Diego more than Colorado. They are the better team and they have a lot more ways to beat you.
Manaea has not been special this season, but he is still a lot better than Urena, who is a bad start waiting to happen.
With the price not being out of control, I like the Friars on the Moneyline here.
