San Diego Padres
This weekend’s series in Colorado didn’t begin the way the Padres would have liked. Eric Lauer was KO’ed in the fourth inning, in which he didn’t retire any of the six batters he faced, and Colorado scored the game’s first nine runs in a 12–2 walkover.
San Diego, which was struggling for enough offense before Fernando Tatis Jr. went out with a hamstring, managed ten hits against German Marquez in the first six innings but could only push two across. Greg Garcia, Franmil Reyes, and Manny Machado combined for eight hits in the first three spots in the batting order.

Nick Margevicius has been the third-best starter in San Diego’s young rotation, after Chris Paddack and Matt Strahm. He’s one of four lefties and the second-youngest starter (behind Paddack). The former seventh round pick out of Rider in 2017 will turn twenty-four next month.
Colorado Rockies
Daniel Murphy drove in three for the Rockies. He’s been back in the lineup since the start of the month after going down in early April, which immediately threw Colorado’s lineup for a loop.
It didn’t help that Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story started slowly. Both have heated up. Story went deep for the ninth time on Friday and Arenado has seen his OPS spike in the last three weeks, from .711 to .969.

Still, whereas the pitching was really a strength last year, it has question marks this season. Marquez has been good, as has Jon Gray, but Kyle Freeland hasn’t had a great start and Tyler Anderson looks utterly lost.
That makes Antonio Senzatela all the more important. He’s still just twenty-four but he’s gone the wrong way since a promising rookie season a couple of years back. He’s striking out just over five batters per nine innings in just twenty-five innings so far this season, walking three, and giving up close to eleven hits. The Rockies need something out of the big righty, especially if Freeland doesn’t come around to start pitching like an ace again.
