San Diego Padres
So far, it has been a good start to the season for the Padres. If they can keep up this kind of play, they will be a very dangerous team in 2022.
Even with their best player and one of the best players in the world sidelined, they are getting contributions from other people which is very good to see. Don’t get me wrong, there are other talented players on this team, but clearly, Tatis is on a different level.
At all costs, they cannot allow what happened to them last season to happen again this year. For a team with these kinds of players, 2021 was totally unacceptable for them and that is just the reality of the situation.
Once again, the NL West is very competitive and it will not be easy to hold off the Dodgers and Giants. Those head-to-head matchups with those clubs will certainly be crucial to determine who is in the first place.
San Diego took the first game with the Reds on Tuesday by a score of 9-6 and they currently leading them 6-1. This is the type of series where they just have to go in there and get the job done with no questions asked.
In the first game of the series, Joe Musgrove went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. He may not get the most attention, but he has been a very steady arm for them.
MacKenzie Gore got the start in game 2 and his final stat line was 5 innings, 1 earned run, and 10 strikeouts. Granted, he did not face a very good team, but he still looked quite sharp out there.
Nick Martinez will be called upon in the finale of the series. He has not been great so far but he will look for that to change when he faces this Cincy team.
Cincinnati Reds
Wow, it has been a dreadful start to the season for the Reds. It is hard to think of another adjective to describe it.
They pretty much have not done anything well this season. When a team has that kind of record, there is not much good they could have done.
Cincinnati comes into this ball game with a record of 3-14 and they already are 7.5 games out of first place. Yes, it is early, but there really is no reason to believe why they will turn it around.
I am not saying I thought they would be great this season but I did not expect this kind of start. 3 wins, really?
Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint why a team is struggling but that really is not the case for this crew. The pitching has been very bad for the most part and the offense has not done all that well on a consistent enough basis.
When those things are combined, it is pretty hard to win all that many games. It goes back to the basics of the sport.
Vladamir Gutierrez got hit pretty hard on Wednesday, as he went 4 innings, walked 6 people, and gave up 6 earned runs. That just is not going to cut it.
Tyler Mahle will be on the bump for these guys on Thursday afternoon. He is a good pitcher but the results have not been pretty for him out of the gate. He is currently 1-2 with an ERA of 5.29.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Padres are 5-0 in their last 5 games as the favorite.
- The Padres are 6-2 in their last 8 games overall.
- The Reds are 17-36 in their last 53 games overall.
- The Reds are 7-19 in their last 26 games as the underdog.
San Diego Padres vs. Cincinnati Reds MLB Prediction:
The Padres have looked pretty good against the Reds so far and I can see that keeping up in this one.
Cincinnati does have one of their better arms on the mound but he is still going to have his hands full with this lineup. San Diego can certainly hit him around if they are on their game.
Martinez may not be great here but as long as he is effective, I like my chances with the Friars.
I like SD on the moneyline here.
