The Padres broke out midway through the opening game of a four-game series on Thursday to beat the Cubs and snap their long losing streak.
Mike Montgomery was rolling until the Padres knocked him out of the sixth inning, scoring three times in total and continuing to score off the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings.

Robbie Erlin went five clean innings, giving up two hits, and a quad of San Diego relievers each pitched a scoreless innings to secure the win.
Joey Lucchesi gave up three home runs in just over four innings pitched in his last start against the Dodgers. He ought to be wary of the long ball against this opponent, too.
Chicago Cubs
Because even without Kris Bryant, who is still recovering and building up strength in his shoulder, the Cubs can hit the ball out of the ballpark at just about every position.
They only managed three hits in total on Thursday night, however. And after finishing June with a season-high .291 batting average, Jason Heyward is back down to .280 after a 1-for-4 game on Thursday. It’s still way more than the Cubs have been used to over the last couple seasons, though.

Kyle Hendricks gave up no more than three runs in any of his six July starts. He had a couple of short starts in there, though, but did manage to go seven and get the win in his last outing against St. Louis, walking none and striking out eight.
