San Diego Padres
The Padres have lost seven games in a row going into their series with Chicago. The first game will be on Thursday night, as it’s just Thursday morning as I write up this game on Friday.
Tyson Ross hasn’t been nearly as good in the second half as he was in the first, when he went at least six innings in 13 out of his 19 starts. Of course, he’s only made two starts since the break, giving up six runs in ten innings of work.

He’s only struck out one more batter in the second half than he’s walked, however. This comes after more the doubling his walk total with his strikeouts in the first half.
Ross threw over 195 innings in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015 before injuries started affecting him. He’s about to hit 120 innings after two seasons of little production so perhaps he’s tiring.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs got a great outing from Cole Hamels in his team debut on Wednesday, striking out nine in a 9–2 win to salvage a split in the quick two-game series.
The addition of Hamels means the Cubs have a lot more leeway with Drew Smyly, who has been working out more intensely but has yet to make a rehab appearance.

Chicago already has four left-handed starters in its rotation, a number which could get cut to three when Yu Darvish returns. That will give Chicago another lefty out of the ‘pen.
Smyly could also fill that role if he gets back in time. He won’t go big innings but he could be filthy as a lefty specialist in the playoffs, if he gets his arm strength and confidence back by then.
