San Diego Padres
Matt Strahm has been one of the San Diego starters to impress in the first month of the season. He has a 127 ERA+ and a WHIP barely over 1.00 in five starts (26.2 innings).
Strahm is a tall, lean lefty with a nice delivery. He isn’t one of these kids breaking into the big leagues in his early-20s. In fact, he’s logged 144 innings since 2016 and has a career ERA+ in the 140s, mostly out of the bullpen for Kansas City and then San Diego.

He came through the minor leagues as a starter, though, and finally has his first chance as a member of a big league five-man rotation at the age of 27.
He’s walked five batters all year (1.7 per nine), which is a huge personal improvement. He struck out a career-high eight last time out and completed a career-high eight innings the start before that. It would appear things are coming together for him.
Atlanta Braves
Strahm went to community college before the Royals picked him in the 21st round. Max Fried had a scholarship to UCLA lined up before the Padres took him seventh overall in the same draft.

And Fried’s numbers are in no way inferior to Strahm’s here on the first day of May. He’s made five starts and two appearances out of the bullpen, totaling 31.1 innings.
He’s got an ERA+ of 190, a WHIP of 1.08 and 2.0 walks per nine innings. I’m setting in for a nice pitcher’s duel between two young lefties most MLB fans don’t know much about.
