San Diego Padres
The Padres beat the Giants in San Francisco on Wednesday to get to 8–5 and get even with Los Angeles, who lost its third in a row, for first-place in the NL West.
San Diego got six good innings from Nick Margavecius and four relievers combined to shut the Giants out over the final third of the game. Kirby Yates and Craig Stammen threw the final two innings and, at least in the early going, they have been fantastic in 2019.

Chris Paddack spent last season between Single and Double-A but he’s a Texan and, at just 23 years old, is a full-time starter for the Pads.
He needed 79 pitches to get through five innings, despite allowing just two hits and a run, in his first start. He didn’t make it out of the fourth the last time out, throwing 89 pitches and walking four against St. Louis. He was fortunate to get away with just one unearned run allowed.
Arizona Diamondbacks
Arizona dropped back down to .500 on Wednesday in a loss vs. Texas. Robbie Ray was good and struck out 10 in five innings but the bullpen blew it late, allowing a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth, plus two in the ninth.
Adam Jones didn’t start but went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter late in the game. He’s been off to a torrid start since he was shunned in free-agency before finally signing a one-year deal in Arizona for $4 million. He’s hit four homers and is batting over .350 so far.

The 28-year-old Christian Walker has also impressed early as Paul Goldschmidt’s replacement. He’s got an OPS+ of over 130 and three home runs, though it’s unlikely, at least based on his track record, that he’ll maintain numbers anywhere close over a full season.
