Pittsburgh Pirates
Once again, it has not been anything all that great for this Pirates team. I really have not seen a lot that has impressed me this year.
I think it is fair to say they are marginally better than they have been in past seasons, but it still is nothing that jumps off the page. This is a team that still has an awful lot of work to do before they get back to where they want to get.
To be totally honest, I do not see Pittsburgh as a team that does a lot well. The pitching has killed them for years and the offense, although better, is still not enough to carry them over the long haul.
It would be nice for this organization to go out there and acquire a few bats and a few arms. I am not suggesting they have to spend top dollar to bring in the best out there, but they need to get more guys that can impact the game in both areas of the game if they want to be a more consistent team.
Given how well the Brewers and Cardinals have played this year, it is hard to see this team gaining a ton of ground in the NL Central. Coming into this one, the Buckos hold a record of 29-45 and they trail Milwaukee by 13 games.
It would have been nice to see them get some victories in this series with the Nationals, but that has not been the case, as they have dropped the first two games. The pitching has not been a problem in either of the losses, but the offense simply has not shown up.
You can tell a team is really struggling when they let Patrick Corbin look like an ace. In the 3-1 victory by Washington on Tuesday, the lefty went 8 innings, allowed 1 earned run, and punched out 12 batters.
Mitch Keller will be getting the ball in this one and he has seen mixed results. Regardless, his record and ERA are not where he would like to be and it does not look like those areas will be getting better as the year goes on.
Washington Nationals
The Nationals are another team that has been quite bad this season. I do not think their poor play has anyone surprised.
At the present time, this is a team that is nowhere near competing. They are in total rebuild mode and there is a good chance they will be there for a while.
There are plenty of bad teams in baseball, but I do think this group is the worst in the sport at the moment. Some other teams have at least shown some glimpses here and there, but there has not been a lot of excitement surrounding the Nats in 2022.
As we know, Juan Soto is a great talent and is one of the best players in the sport, but he is just one guy. Even with him in the lineup, I would not call their offense particularly powerful or productive and that is an issue.
The pitching is also very lacking and it is a true weakness of theirs. I get they have looked good in this series, but this is a staff that can give up runs with the best of them and that has been put on display a lot throughout the year.
As you look at how good some teams are in the NL and in their division, it still feels like it is going to be a long time before the Nationals are truly competitive again. In terms of the NL East, everyone seems to keep improving while they get worse, so the basement is where they will likely be for years to come.
Despite Patrick Corbin throwing the gem on Tuesday, he has been a major disappointment this season. When they signed him, the expectation is he would be a top-of-rotation guy and truthfully, he has seriously underperformed since he has been here.
Getting the ball in the finale is Paolo Espino. Although he might not be a guy that jumps off the screen, he has been decent this season and will look to pitch his team to the sweep on Wednesday.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Pirates are 18-43 in their last 61 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15.
- The Pirates are 5-17 in their last 22 games.
- The Nationals are 4-0 in their last 4 vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- The Nationals are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. the NL Central.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Washington Nationals MLB Prediction:
Based on how both of these teams have played, it is hard to have a ton of confidence in either of them. With that said, I do trust the Nats a little more here.
Look, Espino is not some great arm, but he is better than Keller, who has been pretty bad this year. It is reasonable to expect the Bats for Washington to get to him and that bullpen.
The runs are too many for me to lay with the Nats, but the Moneyline is still a reasonable price in this spot.
Give me the Nationals as the short home favorite.
