Pittsburgh Pirates
On the whole, Trevor Williams’ 2018 was quite good. He started 31 times and finished with an ERA just over 3.00. If you look closer, you’ll see he really was two different pitchers at three different parts of the season.
He started and finished fantastically with an extended rough patch in the middle. So far this season, he’s looked good, having thrown six innings in each of his first two starts and winning both.

His six innings the first time out were scoreless. His six innings the last time were walk-less, though he gave up seven hits and four runs (three earned). Perhaps Clint Hurdle sent him out for an inning too long; he actually started the seventh and got one out before the hook.
Still, nine strikeouts to just one walk and a 2–0 record is certainly a way to start a season feeling good about yourself.
Washington Nationals
Jeremy Hellickson went six scoreless innings and Washington built up a 15–0 lead in Philadelphia on Wednesday before the Phillies pushed a meaningless run across in the ninth against Trevor Rosenthal.
Adam Eaton, Anthony Rendon, Matt Adams, and Yan Gomes drove in multiple runs in the thumping and Washington is 6–5 after hanging 25 runs on the Nationals in the final two games of their three-game series.

Patrick Corbin has looked good in a dozen innings (two starts) to begin his Nats’ career. He’s fanned 13 batters and given up just five runs thus far but Washington’s bullpen is a place I don’t trust.
Kyle Barraclough has been excellent since coming over from Miami in what many considered an overpay. Thing is, if the Nationals want to compete this season, they need help in the bullpen and, so far, he’s delivered.
Koda Glover should return sometime at the end of this month to provide some reinforcement.
