Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates missed a chance to earn a split in Arizona and instead dropped Thursday afternoon’s game, 9–3.
JT Brubaker gave up three hits and two runs in five innings of work and left with a lead but Pittsburgh’s bullpen could not hold it for him.
Chase De Jong and Yerry De Los Santos combined to give up seven runs in the seventh inning. De Los Santos was especially bad, giving up two hits and three walks without retiring a batter.
As a team, Pittsburgh managed just five hits. Ke’Bryan Hayes had two of them. Oneil Cruz went 0-for-2 but walked twice and scored a run.
The road trip continues to San Francisco, where Pittsburgh will play three games this weekend. The Pirates are jockeying with the Reds and Cubs to stay out of last place in the NL Central Division.
Bryse Wilson came over from the Atlanta Braves earlier in the season in a trade for Richard Rodriguez.
He’s made 12 starts for Pittsburgh and has a 5.86 ERA in 66 innings with a record of 2–6.
He doesn’t walk many (2.5 per nine) but he gives up over 11 hits per nine innings and strikes out just over six per nine.
He’s gone at least nine innings in three straight starts, giving up a total of seven runs.
San Francisco Giants
After sweeping a mini two-game series against Oakland and taking the first of three against San Diego, San Francisco dropped the final two in the series against the Padres before Thursday’s travel day.
After a good start, the Giants are still floundering below .500. It would seem getting above that mark is about the best they can make of this season.
Earning a wild card berth feels more and more like a stretch at this point. The Giants are 7.5 games out of a playoff spot.
And the wins are just too few and far between. They have won just six times in 20 games since the break.
The starting rotation has been good, however, and the Giants have the big arms lined up for the weekend.
Carlos Rodon (10–6 139 ERA+) starts things off. He and his co-ace Logan Webb both are stingy with the home run ball. Webb gives up 0.6 per nine innings; Rodon is even better with 0.5 per.
The lefty struck out a career-high 185 batters last season and he’s got a shot at reaching 200 this year, if he finishes strong.
He comes into this start with 161, though he’s striking out more than a full batter per nine innings less than last year.
This season he’s on track to throw more innings than in any other season of his career. His previous high came in his 2016, his second year on the job with the White Sox, when he completed 165.
