Pittsburgh Pirates
It certainly has not been all that great of a season for the Pirates. They have not been as bad as I thought they would be by now but it still has not been anything worth noting.
This team has been such a laughing stock for a while now that you just expect them to be bad. If they were actually relevant, I would be surprised.
Sometimes it can be tricky to figure out why a team is not doing well but that is not the case for this team. They have a lot of flaws on their ball club and oftentimes, the opposition exposes them.
What you are seeing from Pittsburgh now and what you have seen from them in past seasons is the fact that they are just not an overly talented baseball team. Talent is not everything in baseball but it still is very important and they simply do not have enough of it in order to compete at a high level.
Despite this team not having a lot of top players, they also do not have a very high payroll. Unless something crazy happens, you are not going to see this team spend a lot of money on players so they will keep having similar results.
In the first two games with the Padres, the Buckos have split them. Although it might not mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things, if they were able to win on Sunday and take this series, that is something they could build off of.
J.T. Brubaker went 5 innings and did not allow an earned run in their win over San Diego on Saturday. Him putting forth that kind of outing against that lineup is something that certainly surprised me.
Pittsburgh will now turn to Roasny Contreras in this one. He certainly is going to have his hands full with that offense.
San Diego Padres
The Padres have played a very good brand of baseball so far this season. I have been quite impressed with their level of play thus far.
How they are playing now is how they should have played a year ago. Given the people that are on this team, it makes sense that they are playing at this level.
It was understood that what they did a year ago was simply a massive underperformance. I get that they dealt with injuries but they were a big disappointment last season and knew that could not repeat once again in 2022.
One reason for even more optimism surrounding San Diego is the fact that their best player, and one of the best players in the world, Fernando Tatis Jr. has not played at all this season. Once he is back in the lineup and healthy, you are going to see a very good team be even more dangerous.
In the absence of Tatis, a lot of other players have stepped up which is what needs to happen. Don’t get me wrong, they have talent on this roster without him but it still is good to see that happen. A lot of other teams would have folded if their best player was sidelined.
When you look at why they have done so well this season, they have been able to get solid contributions on both sides of the field. The pitching has held its own for the most part and the offense is scoring runs and doing damage like it was asked to do.
Unless they spin out of control, it is very realistic to expect that the Friars keep up this kind of play and continue being one the best team in the NL and a legit threat.
MacKenzie Gore, although he is not someone with a ton of experience, has been impressive this season. He comes into the game with a 3-1 record and an ERA of 2.06. He knows what he needs to do when he faces a lineup like this.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Pirates are 17-35 in their last 52 games following a win.
- The Pirates are 9-20 in their last 29 games vs. the NL West.
- The Padres are 14-6 in their last 20 games as a favorite.
- The Padres are 4-0 in their last 4 Sunday games.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Diego Padres MLB Prediction:
The Padres will look to end this series off on the right note. If they are on their game, they should be able to do so.
In this one, I look for Gore to keep up his good pitching and keep the Pirates in check. I just do not see Pittsburgh having a ton of production on the offensive side of things here.
Contreras is certainly a talented prospect but he has not seen a team like this before. He can be effective but I still expect the Padres to get some runs off him and get int their pen.
Give me the Padres laying the runs at home.
