The Pirates and Brewers will be ending their series on Sunday afternoon from American Family Field.
In this spot, Milwaukee is laying pretty good juice at home. The total opened at 7.5 and is now up to 8.
Jose Quintana will be going against Eric Lauer here.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates still have not played great this season and they have an awful lot of work to do still, but I at least feel like they have some sort of direction with their team, which has not been the case for a while now.
I know what they have done has not stood off the page, but a lot of people thought they would be a lot worse than where they are. The fact they are even a little relevant has been surprising.
If Pittsburgh can continue to build their team in the right way and acquire the necessary talent, then it is possible they could be more of a threat in the NL. They definitely have a foundation with some of their players and that is a good start, but they still need more in order to be a complete team.
I like what this team has done with their offense and they are hoping similar things can happen with the pitching because that area is quite lacking. If they do not seriously improve in that area, then it is going to be very hard for them to get where they want.
After dropping the first game by a score of 4-3, the Buckos got the 4-3 win on Saturday over Milwaukee. They were able to get enough offense and the pitching did a good job against that lineup.
Zach Thompson went 4.2 innings and allowed 2 earned runs in their victory on Saturday. The bullpen, which has not always performed all that well this season, was able to get the job done in that one as they allowed just 3 hits and 0 earned runs.
Jose Quintana will get the ball here and I have liked what I have seen from him so far. He is not the guy he once was, but he still has been effective and is able to give his team a chance when he is out there.
Although it might not have a big impact on the standings, being able to take 2 of 3 for the Pirates would be big. They could certainly do so, but they would have to do it against a team they have not always played that well against.
Milwaukee Brewers
I would say the Brewers have been a good team this season and they are still one of the best in the NL, but I am not as high on them as some other clubs.
When I look at teams like the Dodgers, Mets, and Braves, I see teams that can be totally dominant when they truly click and I do not see that with this group.
What I see with Milwaukee is a team that could get to a certain point and that is about it. Right now, I just do not see them getting over the hump and making a true deep postseason run.
There is no question that pitching is a big strength of theirs and they are going to try and lean on that as much as possible, but it would still be nice to see them as a more balanced club.
The offense does have some good hitters and they can score runs, but I do not feel the lineup they have now would get them where they want. Now, if they go out there and beef it up at the deadline, it could be a different story.
In the 4-3 loss on Saturday, Brandon Woodruff went 6 innings while allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 9 batters. It is hard to complain about that outing, but the offense was not able to do all that much.
After looking a little flat, Milwaukee really needs to come out and get the job done on Sunday. If they were to drop 2 of 3, it would not be the end of the world, but they really should be taking care of teams like the Pirates.
The Brewers will be sending Eric Lauer to the mound and he has looked good this season. With some of the other big names on this staff, there are times when he gets overshadowed, but I have liked what I have seen from him this season.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Pirates are 35-73 in their last 108 games vs. the NL Central.
- The Pirates are 10-22 in their last 32 games.
- The Brewers are 5-0 in their last 5 games vs. a left-handed starter.
- The Brewers are 5-1 in their last 6 games following a loss.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
The Brewers did not look great on Saturday, but I do feel they can get back on track here.
Both starters have been solid here and it would not surprise me if that kept up in the finale on Sunday.
In the end, I see Milwaukee being a little too much for Pittsburgh.
It is a little more juice than I would like, but my play is Brewers on the Moneyline.
