Kevin Newman homered for a third consecutive game and in doing so, extended his hit streak to 18 games, a franchise record for a rookie.
He also drove in the game-winning run with a fielder’s choice in Friday’s 3–2 victory in Milwaukee. The Pirates have won three in a row and seven out of eight, going into Saturday.

Chris Archer only finished four innings because he tweaked something on a swing-and-miss in his second at-bat of the game. The Pirates’ bullpen threw five scoreless innings.
Felipe Vazquez hadn’t had much work with the Pirates winning a lot of games by several runs so he was able to come and and get six outs in a row, striking out four. He only needed 25 pitches so I suppose there’s a possibility he throws again Saturday, if needed. If he does, he certainly won’t pitch in this game.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Pirates will throw the lefty craftsman, Steven Brault, at the Brewers on Sunday. Brault didn’t have a good start to the season but he’s been fine over his last six starts.
He’s gone 32 innings over his last six and allowed just eight runs. He’s not a strikeout pitcher but the ratio of strikeouts to walks is iffy; even during his recent run of good outings, he’s struck out just 24 batters to 14 walks. It’s hard to believe he can sustain the success with that many walks.

Brault’s finest start of the season, or at least the longest, came three outings ago, against Milwaukee. He pitched into the seventh inning and got an out before Clint Hurdle came calling.
He does have the big advantage of throwing from the left side against Christian Yelich. The Bucs held Yelich in check on Friday (0-for-4) and the reigning MVP hits about 100 points less against southpaws than he does against righties.
