NL Central baseball sees the Pirates in Milwaukee to take on the Brewers on Monday, April 18th.
Zach Thompson is going for the Pirates and Eric Lauer is going for the Brewers.
The first pitch is set for 7:40 ET from American Family Field.
Pittsburgh Pirates
It is a very real possibility that it could be another down year for the Pirates in 2022. Sure, they could end up surprising some people, but that is not all that likely.
If you are a fan of this team, it is hard to even be all that optimistic about the direction this club is headed in. At times, it does not seem like they are even trying to get better.
They play in a very tough league and division and they do not match up to any of the better teams all that well. Unless they go out there and really improve their roster, they will continue to be a laughing stock for years to come.
They certainly have some players on offense that stand out and have some potential, but the pitching still needs a ton of work. When you do not have consistent pitching, it makes it very hard for a team to win on a consistent level and they have found that out for a while now.
Pittsburgh is coming off taking three games out of four against the Washington Nationals and they will look to keep that up in the series with the Brewers. Of course, the level of competition will be much higher for them in this series.
In the last game of the series against the Nats, the Buckos won by a score of 5-3. In that series, they outscored DC 22-18.
Jose Quintana went 4 innings and allowed 3 earned runs in their last win. He did not have very high strikeout numbers, but he was still mostly effective when he was out there.
Zach Thompson will certainly be in for a big challenge on Monday night when he tries to slow down that Milwaukee offense.
Milwaukee Brewers
There is certainly reason to believe that the Brewers could have a strong season just like they did last year.
The NL Central does have a few solid teams, but they should be able to win it if they stay healthy. I would expect the Cardinals to be competitive all year long, but I would still give the edge to these guys.
Yes, it is early, but consistency is not a word that would be associated with this group quite yet. I would eventually expect them to get more consistent as the year goes on, but they have not quite found their groove yet.
Right now, Milwaukee has a record of 5-5 and they are 4th in the Central. The only team in that division that has been very bad out of the gate is the Reds, who sit at 2-8.
In the early part of the season, they have dropped some games they should have won, but those kinds of things are bound to happen during a long season. As long as they do not make it a habit, they should be in good shape.
This club split a 4-game set with the Cardinals last week and they did win the last game of the series over St. Louis by a score of 6-5. Friday was certainly one to forget for them as they got smoked 10-1, but they were competitive in the rest of them.
Aaron Ashby went 4 innings and did not allow an earned run in the game on Sunday. He may not be a huge name in the rotation, but he is going to have to step up this season when he is called upon.
Eric Lauer will get the start for them in the series opener with the Pirates. He does not have a win or loss at the moment but has an inflated ERA that is north of 6.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Pirates are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games.
- The Pirates are 3-13 SU in their last 16 games against Milwaukee.
- The Brewers are 5-1 SU in their last 6 games at home against Pittsburgh.
- The Brewers are 4-2 SU in their last 6 games.
Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
This game is a good opportunity for the Brewers to take advantage of a team they are better than.
Milwaukee has the pitching advantage and they are just a better team in general.
I could see the Pirates keeping it close for a bit, but I do not see them sustaining that over a full game.
I will lay the run line with the Crew here.
