The Nationals won the first of five against the Phillies on Monday, 7–2, and increased their minimal lead over the idle Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Wild Card.
Washington entered the day with a win and a loss less than Milwaukee. Now the win has been taken care of. The Nats play two on Tuesday to even up the total games played with Milwaukee.

Philly’s starting pitching can’t keep up with Washington’s. It’s got a chance to split the doubleheader. Actually, it’s got a chance to sweep the doubleheader because Aaron Nola is going in the non-bullpen game (though he’s up against Max Scherzer).
It’s got a chance to win this one too because Anibal Sanchez isn’t invincible and Drew Smyly isn’t always bad.
Usually Sanchez is good and Smyly is bad though. And Washington is at home with all the motivation in the world to come out and play well. The Phils aren’t going to win this one.

Washington Nationals
The first four did most of the damage on Monday. Turner, Eaton, Rendon, and Soto were on base fourteen times (Soto finished 0-for-1 with four walks).
They drove in five and scored five too.
This four and the elite starting pitching would be enough but I like the bottom half of the lineup too. Howie Kendrick, Yan Gomes, and Asdrubal Cabrera have been around and you just know they’re going to come up with clutch hits.
Victor Robles is a dynamic speed/power threat who has the potential to work wonders at the bottom of a National League lineup as a sort of second Trea Turner.
It’s hard to know what to expect from a 22-year-old in his first postseason but the fact that the Nats don’t rely on him too much is a good omen.
