The Phillies will hit the road for Pittsburgh to start a series with the Pirates starting on Thursday evening.
Zach Wheeler and Zach Thompson are the probable starters in this one.
To open up, Philadelphia is a pretty good-sized favorite on the road for the opener.
Philadelphia Phillies
With the 7-2 victory on Wednesday, the Phillies were able to secure the series victory over the Braves which is all they could have asked for heading into the series.
After not playing so well in the second game with Atlanta, the Phils bounced backed and picked up an impressive win over one of the best teams in the NL.
Kyle Gibson tossed a solid game in the finale as he went 6 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on four hits. I thought he looked sharp against a very talented and powerful offense.
The really big inning for this group came in the 5th as they scored a total of 5 runs in the inning. The bats for Philadelphia looked locked in, but some errors by the Braves did aid in the big inning.
In their big inning, Didi Gregorious picked up a ground ball for an RBI, and Odubel Herrera had a single that scored a run. In the same frame, Kyle Schwarber picked up a sac fly, and J.T Realmuto ended the rally with a single that brought in two runs. It is not very often that teams have big innings against Atlanta so they take them when they can get them.
The previously mentioned Morton has not been great this season, but I liked the way this group attacked him. They were able to work the counts while forcing him to come at them and make mistakes. They were also able to get 2 runs off of Tyler Matzek in the 6th inning.
Unpredictable continues to be a word to describe the Phillies in 2022. After looking very bad against the Cubs, they played up to their potential against a very tricky opponent. I am curious to see what version of them we get when they head to Pittsburgh.
Getting things started on the mound is Zack Wheeler and he has pretty much been as advertised this season. The shaky start to the year is behind him and he has been back to being one of the best starters in the NL for a while now.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates had the day off on Wednesday and will look to re-group against the Phillies starting on Thursday after they lost both games to the Cubs this week.
Something that was pretty clear in their last series was the lack of offense. Although the Cubs were not exactly sending top hurlers to the mound, they were only able to get four runs in two games which just is not acceptable.
In the opener of the series, Pittsburgh had more opportunities to cash in but that was not the case in the finale. They were only able to muster 4 hits off of Keegan Thompson and they did not appear to have any rhythm on that side of the field at all in the second game.
Their last series is still a reminder that their offense has some work to do before it is where they want it to be. It is better than it has been in a little bit, but there are still improvements that need to be made.
Although they have struggled in this category quite a bit this season, it is pretty hard for me to knock the pitching against the Cubs. Overall, they were solid in that category but just were unable to get a lot of support.
Both JT Brubaker and Bryse Wilson were able to put forth solid performances in their respective starts. Granted, it did not happen against a great offense, but it was still good to see for them.
Pittsburgh is going to have to quickly turn the page when they host the Phillies for this upcoming series. If their offense is as ineffective as it was against Chicago, it is going to be hard for them to have all that much success in these games.
Zach Thompson will be getting the start in this one and has been pretty rough this season. He does not have a lot of numbers that are all that impressive and he is going to have a very big challenge ahead of him when trying to slow down this order.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 6-0 in their last 6 Thursday games.
- The Phillies are 11-4 in their last 15 during game 1 of a series.
- The Pirates are 2-5 in their last 7 games after scoring 2 runs or less in their previous game.
- The Pirates are 5-16 in their last 21 games following an off day.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Pittsburgh Pirates MLB Prediction:
In a spot like this, I just see the Phillies being too much for the Pirates to handle.
Look, Philadelphia is far from a perfect team, but they are the much better club in this spot and I feel they will show it.
When it comes to the pitchers, I trust Wheeler a lot more in this spot than Thompson who has been unreliable at best.
The ML is too out of control, but I do not mind laying the runs here.
