Philadelphia Phillies
Despite showing signs here and there of what they can be, the Phillies have really not been all that impressive of a team. With all of the hype that surrounded this group before the year started, they certainly have not lived up to it yet.
I am not saying they have been a total disappointment but they also have not blown me away. At the moment, they are just a middling team and you can see that based on their record.
Coming into this series in New York, the Phils have a record of 21-24 and are 2nd in the NL East but share the same record as the Braves. Sure, either one of those two teams could catch the Mets and win the division crown but I feel the more likely scenario is the Mets staying steady and taking it.
There is no question that this is a team with a lot of talent but that is not the whole story. Talent will only get a team so far and they are a perfect example.
It is still fair to say that their main firepower comes from their offense which would explain all of the runs they score. However, the pitching department is average at best and is certainly a weakness for them at times.
For them to be in the true contender category, they would have to really add some proven arms into the rotation and pen. As presently constituted, they would not be able to make a deep playoff run.
The up-and-down play of Philadelphia was well documented in their past series with the Braves, as they split the 4 game set. They were able to defeat Atlanta in the finale by a score of 4-1 and will look to build on that with the Mets.
Aaron Nola looked very sharp in the win on Thursday as he went 8.1 innings, allowed just 1 earned run, and punched out 10 batters. Now, it is Bailey Falter’s turn to put forth a strong outing for his club on Friday.
New York Mets
How the Mets have played so far is how the Phillies would want to be playing. They have played with a high level of consistency which is critical during a long season such as this one.
For the first time in a long while, the Mets are an enjoyable team to watch. Fans want to see them play. They are not always being criticized. People genuinely believe that this team can go far.
A lot of folks would attribute that to Showalter but I do feel the love for him is a little hyperbole. There is no question Buck is a very good manager but to feel he is the main reason for the team playing very well is giving him too much credit.
Is he a reason why? Of course. Has he changed the culture and set the tone? Absolutely. However, let us not forget that it helps that the owner of this team opened his wallet and picked up some big-time talent for this roster. The last time I checked, it helps to have talent on a roster.
Listen, I am by no means a Luis Rojas apologist but let us be fair here. Last season on this roster there was no Scherzer, Bassitt, Marte, Escobar, Canha. We cannot be blind to the fact that this team is marketably more talented than it was a year ago.
A common belief out there was the only way the season for the Mets would be derailed would be if the injury bug hit. Well, I would not say that it has wiped them out but having Scherzer sidelined with an injury is serious. With deGrom already out of the rotation, that just puts added stress and pressure on other guys to step up.
New York will look to play much better than they did in their past series with the Giants. After winning the first game in blowout fashion, they dropped the next two games 13-12 and 9-3. Although the Phillies have not been spectacular, this series with them is certainly not going to be easy.
Thomas Szapucki got rocked in the last game with San Francisco. His final line was 1.1 IP, 7 H, 9 ER, 3 BB, and 2 K. Wow! Carlos Carrasco will have to give a lot more length and production in this one.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 2-5 in their last 7 games.
- The Phillies are 7-17 in their last 24 vs. NL East.
- The Mets are 14-2 in their last 16 when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in the previous game.
- The Mets are 16-5 in their last 21 games vs. a right-handed starter.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Mets MLB Prediction:
After what was a terrible last game with the Giants, I look for the Mets to bounce back here. They know the importance of this game/series and I expect them to show who the better team is.
Really, my main reason for feeling confident in New York here is their pitching advantage. I think they hold that in terms of the starter and the same goes for the pen.
Carrasco will have his hands full with this lineup but I feel he will be up for it and deliver a quality start. Falter might not get crushed here but I just have a hard time seeing him last against the Mets. Once he is gone, it would not surprise me if the Philly bullpen gives up some more runs.
I like the Mets on the run line in this contest.
