Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have been an up-and-down ball club this season. As the year progresses, they are going to look to be more consistent.
Philadelphia has certainly shown flashes of what they can be but has yet to really put it all together. Yes, it is early but that excuse only works for so long.
A huge strength of this team is their offense and that has been put on display in 2022. Given the kind of guys they have in that lineup, you would expect them to score an awful lot of runs.
The pitching, however, is a totally different issue and I am not sold on them being great in that department this year. I could see them being better than they were in past seasons but there are still real question marks in that part of their game.
There is no question they went out there and got some solid pieces to their bullpen along with a solid rotation they had. I am just not sold that is going to get them by for the duration of 162.
After they get no-hit on Friday, they came back and beat the Mets on Saturday by a score of 4-1. That was an impressive win for them and they will look to carry that over into Sunday and win the series.
Kyle Gibson went 4.1 innings and did not allow an earned run in game 2. He was wild and issues 5 walks but was certainly effective while he was out there.
Zach Eflin will be out on the mound for the rubber match here. He is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.12. In his career, he has seen mixed results when facing off with the Mets.
New York Mets
It has been quite the start for the Mets and they are hoping this is just the beginning of what will be a very special season of baseball for them.
What New York has done in the early going is what any team could ask for and it is what any manager preaches. They are consistently winning series and they are beating the teams they ought to beat along with taking care of some of the better competition.
The only thing they have Mets fans a little nervous about is how they have been prone to fast starts in the past and often fizzle out. Last season was a good example of that as they started off very well and looked like the division was theirs but came nowhere close to the race by the end of the year.
On the flip side of that, a reason to feel confident that this strong start is not just smoke and mirrors is because of that guy they have managing their team. When you have Buck Showalter as your skipper, there is an extra sense of confidence that a team gets that other managers simply do not bring out in their clubs.
New York knows the importance of this game with the Phils. When you have one of the best pitchers in baseball going against your divisional rival, you have got to get the job done.
Taijuan Walker went 5 innings and did not allow an earned run on Saturday. The bullpen did not do its job and allowed the Phillies to get some runs later on in the ball game.
The Mets will be calling upon Max Scherzer in this one and he will try and repeat what he has already done. He does not have a loss on the year and has an ERA below 2.

Scherzer has seen a lot of Philadelphia over the years and he has not always been a lock to be great against them. He will be navigating through a tough offense and I am not sold he will not make a few mistakes here and there.
I certainly feel it is reasonable for Eflin to be solid in this one and keep his team in it. The Mets may win the game but I do not want to lay the run line with them.
