The Phillies and Brewers will be capping off their series on Thursday afternoon.
Zach Eflin and Corbin Burnes are the opposing pitchers in this one.
Milwaukee is a good size favorite at the moment with the total set at 7.5.
Philadelphia Phillies
As is often the case with the Phillies, they are once again going through a rollercoaster of a season. As a baseball fan, that should not come as a surprise.
Coming into the season there were undoubtedly very high expectations for this group but the simple fact of the matter is they have not lived up to them and it appears it is going to be another season of being a middling squad for them.
Don’t get me wrong, there have been times where they have shown what they are capable of but it has not been done on a consistent enough level. A slow start really hurt them and then it has been a lot of trading wins and losses.
The pundits often like to talk about how talented Philadelphia is, but they also have plenty of flaws, and those are often exposed by better teams.
The offense is clearly their biggest strength but the pitching and defensive side of things need a lot of work. Until those areas truly get fixed, I have a hard time seeing them fit in the contender category.
The Phils did take the first game of the series by a score of 3-2 and they currently lead the Brewers by a score of 4-0 in the 3rd inning.
Needless to say, it would be a big statement by them if they were able to win this series with Milwaukee. Whenever you can take down one of the best teams in your league, it is a good sign that you can build off.
Zach Eflin will be getting the ball in the finale here. So far, his 2022 season has been a mixed bag and it is hard to know what to expect when he gets the ball on Thursday.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers might not be a team that makes a lot of noise or is flashy but they have been very impressive this season and I only see that continuing.
One word to describe this bunch at this point in the season would be steady. They have certainly set themselves up to have a strong regular season.
Coming into the season, it was understood that it would be these guys and the Cardinals as the two top teams in the NL Central. The part that has surprised some folks is the fact that St. Louis only trails them half a game.
As of right now, Milwaukee holds a record of 33-24. They will have to continue their strong play for the duration of the season if they wish to be in 1st when all is said and done.
As I examine why this team has been able to have success through nearly 60 games, it has not been too complicated to figure out. The pitching has given them chances to win more times than not and the offense has produced at a solid clip.
With the players that they have on both sides of the field, I feel they can get to a certain point but I feel they need a few bats to really put them over the top.
At the time of writing this article, Adrian Houser has already given up 4 earned runs. He has been able to record some strikeouts but the batters for the Phillies have also had their success against him.
The ace of the staff, Corbin Burnes will be getting the ball in the last game of the series. It is important that he goes out there and proves why he is considered one of the best hurlers in the sport. The ERA of 2.50 is quite impressive but he does not have the best record to show for it.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 5-0 in their last 5 games.
- The Phillies are 2-5 in their last 7 road games.
- The Brewers are 5-0 in their last 5 Thursday games.
- The Brewers are 14-5 in their last 19 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Milwaukee Brewers MLB Prediction:
There is no question the Brewers have the starting pitching advantage with Burnes on the mound here. Whenever he takes the bump, they should feel good about their chances.
I expect him to be strong in this outing but I could still see a few runs being scored by Philadelphia by the time it’s over.
Really, I do not have a ton of trust in Eflin to keep them in check and the same goes for the pen. Milwaukee does not have the best offense out there but they can have some success against weaker pitching.
I like the over in this contest.
