The Phillies will be starting a series with the Marlins in Miami starting on Friday evening.
So far, the Fish are a pretty good size favorite at home. It might seem weird to some that they are the favorite against the Phillies.
Kyle Gibson will be Facing Sandy Alcantara and that could make for a good duel.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are playing like a better team than they were earlier on and I do like a lot of things they have been able to do, but I still feel like there is something missing from this team that will get them where they want to get.
Look, they have been able to play well in bursts, but the consistency still has not been there. Without a doubt, their up-and-down play has cost them many different times throughout this season.
I view them as the type of team that could be very dangerous if they were able to put it all together, but there is still a big question mark there. The more likely answer is they will continue to mostly underperform.
Even with Bryce Harper out of the lineup, this offense is still very powerful and they can score plenty of runs. Really, that part of their game is not one that I am worried about.
I still find myself having a lot of questions about their pitching. Both the rotation and bullpen are big question marks and they are going to have to get more dependable in that area. There were times when they appeared to be better in those areas, but it still did not happen enough.
If Philadelphia were able to get in as a wild card, it is possible they could be a tough out, but I still have a hard time seeing that. The thought of them really putting it together in the playoffs does not seem like a likely one for me.
It is very important that these guys play well in this series with the Marlins. They are not coming off of playing that well against the Blue Jays and they are going to need to get back on track against a tricky divisional opponent.
The Phils will be turning to Kyle Gibson and they need to get him going. He has put forth some good starts at times, but he is a guy that I expected a lot more from so far this season and he has not always delivered.
Miami Marlins
The Marlins certainly do not have the pieces to put it all together yet, but they have a solid foundation and I like the way they are headed.
To me, they are still a team that is a few years away. It does not mean they cannot still improve, but I do see it being a little while more until they get where they want to be.
Miami does have talented players on the field and more in the system, but I still think they could use more of it. I still see them as a lacking club a lot of the time and it is hard to be a threat in the NL when that is the case.
Clearly, pitching is the biggest strength of theirs and they will look to keep getting stronger there. That part of their game will take them to a certain point, but I still would like to see them be more balanced.
Don’t get me wrong, there have been times before when the offense has shown signs of being good, but I still would like to see it happen more. That part of their game has still held them back and I would not call it a strength of theirs yet.
After dropping the first two games, this club was able to take the next two from the Pirates and get the split. They would have liked to have done better than that and it will only get tougher when they face this Phillies team.
Even though the Fish are not going to win their division, they are still in the mix for the wild card, so every game is still very important to them.
No matter who they are facing, the Marlins should always feel good about their chances when Sandy Alcantara is on the mound. He is the best pitcher in the MLB right now and will likely win the Cy Young Award. Not only does he have great stuff on the mound, but he also consistently gives his team great length, which is not something that happens a ton in today’s game.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 1-5 in their last 6 after allowing 5 or more runs in the previous game.
- The Phillies are 0-4 in their last 4 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The Marlins are 7-2 in their last 9 vs. the NL East.
- The total has gone under in 4 of Miami’s last 5 games.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins MLB Prediction:
Overall, the Phillies are the better team, but I just do not love them in this spot. I feel it will be a tough one for them to pull off.
Listen, the offense for Philadelphia is very talented and powerful, but I still give the nod to Sandy. When he is truly on his game, it is hard for many teams to get any kind of rhythm against him.
Also, Gibson has been shaky at best this year. He could be decent, but I am not expecting anything great out of him in this one.
I do not love laying the runs here, so give me Miami on the ML.
