The Marlins will be hosting the Phillies on Thursday, April 14th.
The probables in this one are Kyle Gibson and Sandy Alcantara.
Miami is currently a short favorite at home here. The total has dropped from 8.5 to 7.5.
Philadelphia Phillies
There is no question that the expectations for this Phillies team in 2022 are very high. Whether or not they will live up to them is another story.
It seems like every year people seem to feel that they will have success and they just cannot seem to put it together. If they do not figure it out this year, it is hard to tell when they will do it.
When you look at the players they have, you can see that they have the tools to have a really good team.
The bullpen is still a bit shaky, but they do have a solid rotation. Plus, they really will not be winning a ton of games with their pitching this season.
The biggest strength of this team is their offense and that is going to be how they win ball games. They improved in this area over the offseason with the additions of Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber, which made a good lineup even more dangerous.
Philadelphia is coming off losing two games out of three to the New York Mets this week. It is early, but those are the things they wanted to avoid happening.
On Wednesday, New York beat them by a score of 9-6. They certainly had chances to win the game, but the Mets had the last laugh when all was said and done.
Aaron Nola was not very effective in their last loss and did not last long. Kyle Gibson will look to be sharper in the series opener with the Fish.
Miami Marlins
I agree that the Marlins are a bit better this season, but I still feel it is going to be hard for them to make any kind of noise.
They play in a division that is very competitive and they are not on the same level as the top teams. There is no question it is going to be a tall task for them in the NL East.
The main reason they should feel like they can compete is because of their pitching. However, as we know, solid pitching can only get a team so far, and eventually, the offense has to perform.
With this team, I still have plenty of questions about their offense. Yes, they do have some decent hitters in the lineup, but it is not on the same level as a team like Atlanta, Philly, or New York.
This series with Philadelphia is going to be a big test for this group. If they were able to win, I do feel some folks would be surprised.
Let’s just say that the beginning of the season has not exactly started off the way they would have liked. They lost 2 of 3 to the Giants and then got swept by the Angels in a 2-game set.
Miami last played on Tuesday, where they lost to Los Angeles by a score of 4-3. It was a similar theme from last year in that one: they could not get the offense going when needed and they failed to get the big hit when necessary.
Despite the loss, Jesus Luzardo was very impressive in their last game, as he went 5 innings, allowed just 2 hits, and struck out 12 batters. Sandy Alcantara will look to have similar results when he has the challenge of keeping that Phillies’ offense in check.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 4-9 SU in their last 13 games.
- The Phillies are 2-4 SU in their last 6 games.
- The total has gone over in 4 of Philadelphia’s last 6 games played on a Thursday.
- The total has gone under in 4 of Miami’s last 5 games.
- The Marlins are 1-4 SU in their last 5 games.
- The Marlins are 1-5 SU in their last 6 games in April.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Miami Marlins MLB Prediction:
This is a battle between two talented pitchers. It should make for a good matchup.
It makes sense to have confidence with Miami when they have their ace on the mound, but it will be no easy task against Philadelphia.
I look for this game to end up being close, so I cannot lay the run line with the Marlins.
Give me the Phils getting the 1.5 runs on the road.
