Philadelphia Phillies
Philadelphia opened the post-break slate with series wins over the Padres and then the Dodgers. The Phillies won game one of a four-game set with Cincinnati on Thursday night and extended their lead in the NL East to 2.5 games.
Atlanta’s run differential is still tops in the division, however. It’s double Philadelphia’s (66 to 32), which actually trails Washington, albeit by just four runs. Most other divisions around baseball are set according to the Pythagorean Expectation, except the NL East. And it’s a close enough race that it may not finish according to it, either.

Vince Velasquez went seven innings for the first time in just under a year the last time out. He gave up two hits and struck out seven Padres in the scoreless outing. He gave up two hits and no runs in the start before that. His strong run of late has his ERA+ back up over 100.
He also made his first relief appearance of the season on Tuesday, two days after beating San Diego. He pitched the 16th and final inning of Philadelphia’s win over the Dodgers to earn the win.
Cincinnati Reds
Matt Harvey will make his final start for the Reds on Saturday, unless he’s traded before then. Cincinnati intends to trade him and the front office has made no attempt to hide it.
The Dark Knight got lit up by Pittsburgh his last time out, right in the middle of Pittsburgh’s 11-game winning streak when the offense was beating up everybody, Corey Kluber included. The damage was not limited to Harvey.

I would be surprised to see Cincinnati get back anything more than a middling prospect, or two. But, hey, it’s something. If you plan on betting this game, just keep an eye on the news and make sure you list Harvey if he’s important to the play. It wouldn’t surprise me to hear that the Reds held him out with a deal in place.
