MLB Baseball Gambling Total: O/U: 8
An NL East showdown starts on Tuesday evening when the Braves host the Phillies for the first game of their series.
Nick Nelson and Spencer Strider will be the starters in this one.
Atlanta is currently a very big favorite at home. The total opened at 7.5 and it has been bumped up to 8 in most spots I have seen.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies come into this game with a winning streak of five and they really have been playing some solid baseball of late.
In their last series, they knew they had a very good opportunity to really take care of business and they did just that against the Pirates as they won all four of the games in the series.
I know their last opponent was not great competition, but I mostly liked what I saw from this group and they will have to keep that up when they face their divisional rival.
Aside from the first game where the bullpen nearly blew the game, I liked what the pitching did against the Pirates. Taking away the opener where they allowed seven runs, Philadelphia allowed just a combined five runs in the next three games.
The offensive part of their game has been the biggest strength for the Phillies and that was put on display once again against Pittsburgh. They scored a combined 22 runs and were able to get a lot of different contributions on that side of the field.
Philadelphia was able to take two of three from the Braves when they met last week and they will look to do so again here in this two-game set.
As of right now, the Phillies lead the Cardinals by one game for the final Wild Card Spot. To say that every game for them is important right about now would be a big understatement.
Nick Nelson will start things off in this series and he has been solid so far. Based on what has happened in the past, he will not be asked to go all that deep in this one and it will turn into a bullpen game.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves have also been playing some good baseball, but that has not translated into them gaining a ton of ground in their division for a bit.
Right now, this team comes into this game with a record of 62-41 and they trail the Mets by 3.5 games. For a while now, it seems like it has been hovering right around that number.
Regardless, this is still one of the best teams in the NL at the moment and there is no question they are a real threat. It would not surprise me if they are again dangerous in October.
Atlanta is 6-4 in their last 10 games and they have won three in a row after sweeping the Diamondbacks over the weekend which is just what they needed to do.
I thought the offense was decent in the series with Arizona, but I really liked what I saw from the pitching staff in those games.
The Braves were able to get strong outings from Kyle Wright, Ian Anderson, and Max Fried in the sweep. The bullpen, which did struggle in the last series with the Phillies, was more effective and consistent which will have to keep up here.
When facing a team like Philadelphia, of course, there is going to be a heavy emphasis on pitching. If they make mistakes, the hitters they have in that lineup are more than capable of making them pay for it.
Starting off the series is Spencer Strider and he is coming off a strong start against the Phillies last time out. He will look to put forth similar results on Tuesday and earn his sixth win of the season.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The over is 3-0-1 in the Phillies’ last 4 vs. a team with a winning record.
- The over is 5-1-1 in the Phillies’ last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The over is 5-0-1 in the Braves last 6 vs. the NL East.
- The over is 4-1-1 in the Braves last 6 games against a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
In a spot like this, I do see there being a decent amount of offense even though both starters are reliable.
I really like the offenses these teams feature and I expect them to have some production in this spot.
Although the bullpen for the Phillies has been better, I still feel they are going to have a tall task against the Braves and it would not surprise me if they allow some runs here. Also, Strider has been sharp, but Philadelphia has the capability of getting some off him or that pen.
I like the over of 8 here.
