Philadelphia Phillies
What we have seen from the Phillies so far is really just more of the same. The fact that they are an up-and-down baseball team is really not all that surprising.
There is no question that they have played a little better after their poor start but it still has been nothing great. With the group of players they have, what they have done is certainly underperform.
The bottom line is they have really struggled with consistency. It is one thing to play good ball for a short amount of time but it is another to sustain that over a long time.
If you are a fan of this team, this theme of having very high expectations and then not living up to them has to eventually get old. Sure, Philadelphia could turn it around and be better but I do not have much confidence in that. I think what you are seeing from now is what they will be for the remainder of the year.
Clearly, their offense is one of the best in the game and is a true strength of theirs but they are still a flawed team. If they do not fix those, it is hard to see them being all that great.
Quite frankly, I am not all that impressed with their rotation because I feel it is average and will not take them over the top. In terms of the bullpen, it is well documented that it needs a lot of work but still has not improved very much.
The Phillies lost game 3 to Atlanta on Wednesday by a score of 8-4. Since they won the opener, they have not got the job done in the next two with the Braves. They will look to get the split in the finale on Thursday.
Ranger Suarez went 4.1 innings and allowed 5 earned runs in their last loss. He was not very sharp and neither was the bullpen. Aaron Nola will look to get back into the win column when he gets the start here. Currently, he is 1-4 with an ERA of 3.96.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves have played very similarly to the Phillies this season. They do not appear to have any rhythm and certainly have not been consistent.
After winning the World Series in 2021, the expectations were high for this team this season, and rightfully so. Given who they have, it is very realistic to expect them to be in the mix of the NL.
What I am seeing from them is a team that cannot seem to get out of their own way. Yes, they do have areas where they need to improve but they should be better than 2 games below .500. What they have done so far is really not acceptable.
Coming into this game, Atlanta has a record of 21-23 and they trail the Mets by 7 games. Last year, it was similar because they trailed New York for a while and then eventually figured things out and took control of 1st.
However, that happening again does not seem as likely because the Mets are no longer some fraud team. They went out there and really improved their club and now are one of the best teams in the sport.
This is a club that has the talent to figure things out and be more steady but they have to show it. If they do not, they will just be a team that hovers around .500 for the remainder of the season.
Although they dropped the opener to the Phillies, they have picked up two nice wins since then. If they were able to take this one and win 3 of 4, that would be a nice statement by Atlanta.
Kyle Wright will be starting the final game of this series on Thursday. He has looked sharp this season and comes into the game with a record of 4-2 and an ERA of 2.49.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Phillies are 5-2 in their last 7 road games.
- The Phillies are 1-5 in their last 6 games as an underdog.
- The Braves are 4-0 in their last 4 games as the favorite.
- The Braves are 5-2 in their last 7 games vs. the NL East.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Prediction:
This is a critical game for the Phillies here. It would be a bad look for them if they were to drop 3 out of 4.
I certainly feel that Philadelphia can get to Wright and the bullpen but I also feel they will give up their fair share of runs as well.
Despite being labeled as a top arm, Nola often gets hit pretty well and he will have his hands full with this Atlanta lineup. Once the game goes into the hands of that pen, I would expect even more runs.
The over of 8 runs is the play for me.
