Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies are once again an inconsistent baseball team. Nothing is really new there, though.
In the early part of this season, this team did not start off all that well but they have been a little better since then. Still, being good on a regular basis has really not been their calling card for 2022.
This theme of having very high expectations and then being an average team is more of the same for this team but it is an issue. At some point, they have to be able to play as their talent says they should.
Heading into this season, people thought very highly of this club, and for good reason. When you look at the players they have, it is certainly reasonable to feel they can be a threat in the NL.
Despite them having a lot of good players, they are still a flawed team. The offense is the biggest strength of their game but the pitching still needs a lot of work.
The rotation has some good arms in it but I would not call it a top one in this league. It still needs a lot of work and so does the bullpen.
One pitcher who I did not feel would dazzle against the Dodgers was Zach Eflin but he was excellent. The right-hander went 7 innings, allowed 2 earned runs, and struck out 12 batters in the 4-3 win on Sunday.
Philadelphia will now turn to Zack Wheeler and it is fair to say he has not been the guy he was a year ago. The righty comes into the game with a 2-3 record and an ERA of 3.49 but he just has not looked very sharp.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves are in a similar boat that the Phillies are in. They have been a wildly up-and-down team this season and it may end up defining who they are.
A year after winning the World Series, the goals were very lofty for this team. The fans and people in this game expected quite a bit from Atlanta and it certainly made sense.
Even with Freddie Freeman gone as their everyday first baseman, it was not as if they got nobody in return. Matt Olson is more than capable and is one of the best at his position in the sport.
Although Atlanta is a talented team, it does not mean they are without their flaws. So far, you have seen a lot of their vulnerabilities be put on display and if they do not fix things, that will only be happening more and more.
To me, these guys really have to get stronger with their pitching. It seems like it is the case for a lot of teams but I am just not sold on them in that department right now.
I feel what they have in terms of the rotation and pen will get them to a certain point but not over the hump. I do not think they could get by a top NL team in the postseason as presently constituted.
In their last series, the Braves were able to take two of three from the Marlins. All of the games were tight ones but it was good to see them walk away from that with a series win.
Ian Anderson looked pretty sharp in their loss to Miami on Sunday but he did not get very good run support. They will look for that to be different on Monday evening when Tucker Davidson takes the hill.

This is a critical series between two divisional rivals with the same record. With that, I look for the Phillies to start off on the right track.
As noted earlier, Wheeler has not been his sharpest in 2022 but he is still a top arm in this game. He will have his hands full but I see him being strong in this one.
It is hard to have a ton of confidence in Davidson right here. He will be put to the fire against this potent offense and I am not sold on him being all that great.
There is a little juice to pay but it is not too high for me. I look for the Phils to take a close one on the road.
