Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies made quick work of the Cardinals in the Wild Card Round, which means they will likely go back to the top of their starting rotation in Game 2 of the NLDS.
Ranger Suarez will be the expected starting pitcher to open this series in Atlanta, however.
The left-handed pitcher from Venezuela posted an ERA+ over 300 last season in over 100 innings, including a dozen starts.
This season, as a permanent member of the starting rotation, Suarez finished with a 3.65 ERA in 29 starts.
He went 6–1 down the stretch before losing his final two starts but he looked the part in the season’s final two months.
He faced the Braves five times this year and he was at his best most recently. He gave up just seven hits and one run over back-to-back six innings starts.
The Phils only hit .158 in their two-game sweep over St. Louis but they were aided with nine walks and terrific pitching.
They will have to be better than that in this series going up against a complete team in Atlanta that has the advantage of starting at the top of its pitching rotation on Tuesday.
Atlanta Braves
The man taking the ball at the top of that rotation will be Max Fried, the left-hander who already has four consecutive years of substantial postseason experience.
He pitched out of the bullpen in 2018 and 2019 before taking over as a bonafide starter in 2020 and ’21.
All told, he’s already thrown nearly 60 innings in his postseason career against the toughest competition in baseball.
Nearly a week off should have done Ronald Acuna Jr. well. Remember, the Braves won it all last year without their electric outfielder.
This season, he’s back but has been hobbled by back problems. He may continue to DH instead of playing the outfield but just having his bat in the lineup makes a difference for Atlanta.
Looking further down the road in this series, Spencer Strider may be available after all. He missed the season’s final three weeks with a strained oblique but the Braves announced they were optimistic he will pitch in this series, which is a best-of-five.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves MLB Playoff Prediction:
This is a big opportunity for the Phillies to start fast with some momentum already on their side.
A win here means stealing home-field advantage and flipping the starting pitching advantage.
Beating Fried means going into Game 2 with a series lead and their aces, Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola, coming up.
Atlanta will be a big favorite and I wouldn’t bet against the Phillies at a high price.
