Philadelphia Phillies
To me, the first couple of games of this series with Arizona is an example of why the Phillies are an untrustworthy team. They might be better, but I do not love their chances when it really matters.
They came into this series against a very beatable Diamondbacks team hoping to keep up their strong play and do some serious damage.
Unfortunately for Philadelphia, it has been the exact opposite as their opponent has done the damage to them which is just not a good look for a team that hopes to be playing meaningful baseball in October.
I thought maybe the 13-7 loss in the opener would have been the worse game for them in the series, but then they went out there and lost 12-3 on Tuesday. No matter how anyone tries to slice it, getting outscored 25-10 to a team they are supposedly better than is just not acceptable.
In their last loss, Aaron Nola got hit quite hard as he allowed ten hits and eight earned runs in just four innings of work. For a guy who is supposed to be one of the better starters in the game, that is a pretty big disappointment.
For as bad as the pitching was last time out, the offense also really struggled. With the kinds of hitters they have, they should be scoring more than three runs in a game even when facing a very tough customer in Gallen.
I am not going to say two losses to the D’Backs should put this team in panic mode, but it should still give them some sort of reality. Sure, they are an improved team compared to earlier on, but they are still flawed and those flaws can be exposed by any opponent out there.
Bailey Falter will get the ball in the finale and he will look to get his third win in a row. Given how important every game is for the Phils, they need him to really step up and help them earn at least one game in this series.
Arizona Diamondbacks
After playing more of a slugfest type of game in the opener, the Diamondbacks were once again able to score a ton of runs on Tuesday, but the pitching was a lot better than it was in the previous game.
Zac Gallen, who has been very impressive all season long, once again stepped up last time as he pitched seven innings of scoreless ball while punching out seven batters.
This right-hander has now extended his scoreless streak to 34.1 innings which might come to the surprise of some people. He does not get a lot of attention nationally, but he has been one of the better starters in the MLB this season.
Arizona was unable to get the shutout on Tuesday as Noe Ramirez did allow two hits and three runs, but that clearly did not take away from another great outing by Gallen.
Something that has surprised me in these first two games with the Phillies is the effectiveness of the offense for the Snakes. Of course, I knew they could do some damage off of Nola, but I never envisioned them torching him like that the day after they put 13 on the board.
The Diamondbacks finished their 12-3 route by picking up 17 hits. Jake McCarthy finished the day with two hits and five RBI while Alek Thomas picked up four hits and two RBI. It was one of those games where just about everyone in the order was hitting.
Realistically, this team was likely not thinking sweep when they headed into this series, but they definitely have reason to believe now. After doing what they have done in the first two, they know it is a very real possibility they can pull it off.
Starting the final game of this series for them is Tommy Henry and I liked what I saw from him against the White Sox on Friday where he was able to keep them off balance and really did not get hit very hard. Being able to get similar results will likely not come easy when he faces this tough lineup on Wednesday.

I get that the first two games of this series have not been all that close with the Diamondbacks winning handily each time, but I do not see that being the case in this one.
If Philadelphia is going to take this one, they are likely going to have to score a decent amount of runs because I do not exactly love Falter or this bullpen in this spot.
Even if Henry is not very sharp out there and his opponent has some success against him, I still see Arizona keeping this close and maybe they pull off the win and get the sweep.
In this spot, I like the Diamondbacks getting the runs at home.
