The Athletics will be on the road to face the Mariners for the finale of their series on Sunday afternoon.
Frankie Montas will be opposed by Robbie Ray and that is certainly an interesting pitcher’s duel.
Right now, we are seeing a very low total of 6.5 in this contest. It did open at 7 and has dropped half a run.
Oakland Athletics
Man, the A’s have been absolutely freakin dreadful so far this year. To me, there are really no other ways to describe the type of season they have had and the one they will likely continue to have.
At the present time, this is a club that just does not do a lot well. There is not a lot of talent on this roster and until that changes in a big way, it is hard to imagine seeing a lot of change with them.
As we all know, Oakland is not a big market team that just has the luxury to spend money whenever they want for the sake of spending it. Because of that, they are not going to be someone that will just go out there and bring in top players, so they are going to have hope that a lot of their top prospects end up panning out. If not, they are in for a long stretch of irrelevancy.
To me, the last remaining big-time player on this team is Frankie Montas and it would not shock me if he is no longer in an A’s uniform by the time the deadline is over. We saw what happened to Chapman, Manaea, and Olson in the offseason and it would not shock me if the same happens here at the deadline. There are contending teams that will need a quality starter and Oakland knows they will not be able to afford him over the long haul.
When some teams are in a rebuilding stage, they still have the ability to be competitive, but that has not been the case for this group. Coming into this game, they hold a record of 26-54 and trail the Astros by 25.5 games. Based on the huge differences between those two clubs, that really is not all that surprising.
In the first three-game of this series with the Mariners, things have not exactly gone well for the A’s. They did take the 2nd game of the series, but they have done a lot to impress me so far against a mediocre Seattle team.
In their 2-1 loss on Saturday, Paul Blackburn went 6.1 innings, struck out 5 batters, and did not allow an earned run. The bullpen, as if often does, coughed up some runs a blew a chance for them to get the victory.
The aforementioned Frankie Montas will be getting the start here and he is a guy that definitely cannot be totally judged by his record. Clearly, 3 wins and 8 losses are not good, but he does have an ERA of 3.20 and some of his other stats are pretty good. He is finding out what it is like to pitch for a team that simply does not score a ton of runs on a daily basis.
Seattle Mariners
It has been abundantly clear that the Mariners have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season. Anyone that says differently simply has not been paying attention.
In my estimations, the Mariners have not done anything all that special and they are really a team that has played below-average ball for the majority of the season.
When it comes to this team, I think it is important to remember what the expectations were headed into this season. This is a team that was thought of to be a playoff squad and someone that could give the Astros a run in the West. So far, none of those look to be correct and I have a hard time seeing them change.
As I look at this roster, they are definitely a group that has some talent, but I still feel they need some more firepower if they want to get to the next level. Even if they were playing to their full potential, I do not feel what they have now would make them a true threat in the AL.
I would really like to see the M’s add some proven hitters to support this lineup and a few bullpen arms. If they were able to do so, I would view them in a different way, but if not, then I think we would see more of the same from them.
Even with how good of a team Houston is, the division Seattle plays in is not a great one, yet they still trail the Rangers and find themselves in 3rd place. To me, that is very telling and it is concerning for them.
These games with Oakland are far from guaranteed, but they have done their job for the most part in this series. When playing a team as poorly as they are, it is understood what has to happen.
Robbie Ray will get the ball in this game and he is starting to look more like the guy who is one of the best starters in the sport. There is no doubt that he got off to a shaky start in his first year with the Mariners, but he has been much better and he needs to keep that up in the finale.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The Athletics are 26-53 in their last 79 games following a loss.
- The Athletics are 16-45 in their last 61 games on grass.
- The Mariners are 5-1 in their last 6 after scoring 2 runs or less in their previous game.
- The Mariners are 11-3 in their last 14 during game 4 of a series.
Oakland Athletics vs. Seattle Mariners MLB Prediction:
The Mariners have to finish off this series getting the job done and I do see that happening on Sunday.
This is not one where I see them getting an easy win, but I do feel they will be too much for Oakland when all is said and done. Even with Montas on the mound, it is going to be tricky for the A’s and I do not feel they will have enough answers.
When Ray is on the bump, his team should feel good with their chances. Given the kind of lineup he is facing, it is definitely one he should be able to navigate through.
With the price not being totally out of control, I like the Mariners on the Moneyline.
