The A’s and Angels will be opening things up on Tuesday evening from Anaheim.
Cole Irvin and Noah Syndergaard are the slated starters in this one.
Los Angeles is a small favorite at home here with the total sitting at 7.5. That number opened at 7 and has ticked up half a run.
Oakland Athletics
After having a day off on Monday, the Athletics will look to get back on track after they dropped two of three from the White Sox over the weekend.
They were able to pick up the 7-3 victory in the opener with Chicago but dropped the next two. The fact that they took one game surprised a lot of people.
Although the season for the A’s has been quite bad this season, they actually have been playing well of late and are 7-3 in their last 10 games.
In their stretch of strong play, they were able to complete a sweep of the Astros, which was very unlikely. This squad would have hoped to be playing well earlier on in the season when it mattered and not when they were buried in the basement.
After the offense did a good job against the White Sox in the opener, they really did not do a whole lot on that side of the field as they scored just three runs in the next two ball games. I get their lineup is not overly talented, but those are the sorts of things that just cannot happen.
Something I did like in their last series was the pitching, which has struggled a lot this season in terms of the bullpen and rotation.
On Monday, Oakland got rid of Frankie Montas and Lou Trevino in return for JP Sears, Ken Waldichuk, Cooper Bowman, and Luis Medina. There was talk for a while they were going to get rid of some notable arms and they sure did.
Cole Irvin has not been flashy this season and the numbers might not stand out, but he has been solid. When he is really on his game, he is able to induce soft contact, specifically grounders.
LA Angels
The Angels also had the day off on Monday and will look to have some success against their rival starting on Tuesday.
It is well documented how much they have struggled this season and that was the case in their most recent series with the Rangers, as they dropped three of four from them.
The pitching really did not have a lot of answers for Texas, which was expected. That part of their game has not been a big strength for the Halos and they normally are not great at keeping strong lineups in check.
Aside from them scoring nine runs on Saturday, the offense was very quiet for the Angels in that series, as they scored just four runs in the other three games including being shut out in one of them.
As you watch and examine this team more and more, it becomes clearer that the roster they have built is poorly constructed, which is weird to say given they have Trout and Ohtani.
The bottom line is Los Angeles should have done a better job building a supporting cast around their two best guys, but they simply have not done so and it has cost them in a lot of different ways.
This was a season that was supposed to have a lot of hope surrounding it, but this team is right back to where they have been before and they are a long way away from playing any sort of meaningful baseball in October.
Noah Syndergaard will be starting in the opener and I do feel he has been better than the 5-8 record would indicate on the surface, but the team still expected more of him to this point. He has been solid but has not really risen above and beyond in 2022.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The A’s are 7-15 in their last 22 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
- The A’s are 7-22 in their last 29 during game 1 of a series.
- The Angels are 16-42 in their last 58 overall.
- The Angels are 8-22 in their last 30 home games.
Oakland Athletics vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
The Angels clearly cannot take any game lightly, but this is a good chance for them to get into the win column.
Both of these pitchers have the ability to be effective here, but I just trust the offense for LA more in this spot.
I can see this being a close game where the Halos do enough to get the job done in the end.
Give me the Angels laying the short price in this spot.
