The Athletics will in LA to take on the Angels for the last game of their series.
Cole Irvin and Patrick Sandoval are the slotted starters in this one.
As expected, the Angels are a big favorite at home here. The total is set at 7.5 and there has not been a lot of movement there.
Oakland Athletics
I would say the A’s have pretty much played how people thought they would this season. They have not been so dreadful like the Reds but they have also not played great.
Given the types of players that are no longer on this team, it was expected that this group would have a down year. Realistically, the expectations for them in 2022 were not very high because they simply do not have the roster to compete at a consistently high level.
Even though this season is not going to be about the playoffs or being a top team, it has to be about development. There are plenty of players on this team that are still unproven and it would be a good sign if some of them put on display that they will be a part of the future of this club.
Having prospects that are young and talented is one thing but it certainly is not everything. Something can be said for having proven, veteran players and they do not have a lot of those at the moment.
When you have a team such as this that is in the middle of a clear re-build, it is important that they can at least see improvements in their team from the beginning until the end of the season. They have to get some indication that progress has been made and they are on the right path for years to come.
At times this season, Oakland has surprised some people with some of their wins but more times than not, they have lost the games they were expected to.
This series with the Angels is clearly a very big challenge for them. They clearly do not match up close to LA in terms of talent and that is not very hard to pick up on.
With the series being split at two, winning this series would be a nice step in the right direction for Oakland. Cole Irvin will be on the mound in this one and he will look to keep up his strong pitching.
LA Angels
The Angels have been impressive this season. I think most people can agree on that.
It was understood that the expectations for this group were very high coming into the season and the question was whether or not they would be able to live up to them.
When it comes to this team, it is pretty hard to have all that much confidence in them having a very strong season. They have been the epitome of mediocrity in Major League Baseball for so long know that you eventually expect them to revert back to their old ways.
Nonetheless, their strong start this season does not appear to be smoke and mirrors. The Halos appear to be a legitimately good baseball team and could certainly pose as a threat come playoff time.
Just because a lot of folks are bullish on this squad, does not mean they are without flaws. There still are certain areas in which they need to improve to take that leap from good team to title contender.
Some people might disagree, but I am not totally in love with their rotation or bullpen. I get the Ohtani and Syndergarrd attraction but it is certainly not an elite pitching staff. They still need the addition of a few quality starters and arms in the pen for that part of their game to be a true strength.
LA did drop game 1 of this series but came back on Saturday and got the win 5-3 win. They will look for similar results on Sunday afternoon.
Michael Lorenzen delivered 6 innings and did not allow an earned run in their last win. That is a good sign for them because him being an arm they can rely on is going to be critical during the season.
MLB Baseball Betting Trends:
- The A’s are 2-5 in their last 7 games.
- The A’s are 6-15 in their last 21 games when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.
- The Angels are 5-0 in their last 5 Sunday games.
- The Angels are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.
Oakland Athletics vs. LA Angels MLB Prediction:
The Angels know they have to win this series and take the finale. I look for them to be sharp here.
There is no question that Irvin is tough but he will have his hands full with the Angels. I could see him being solid but not completely shutting down LA.
Patrick Sandoval has been sharp this season and I feel confident with him in this one. The reality is he is not facing a tough lineup and I certainly feel he can navigate through them.
I like the Angels laying the runs here.
