Oakland Athletics
The A’s four-game winning streak and 5–1 run to start their season in the States came to an end on Wednesday when Boston snapped a four-game losing streak (longer than any it had last season) of its own to win 6–3.
The A’s scored the first three runs of the game but Boston battled back against Marco Estrada in the last two innings of his outing that started with four shutout frames and then Fernando Rodney in the ninth. Mookie Betts delivered the game-winning double off the third base bag and into left field.

I thought the A’s were the best team in baseball last season but a poor start meant they just lost out to Houston in the division and had to play the Wild Card game, which they lost to New York.
Oakland is going to be a serious contender to knock Houston off its perch atop the AL West this year with Frankie Montas as a full-time starter. The kid has gas and a slider and split combo to match. He put up zeros against the Angels in his first start of the season before giving up a solo job to Kole Calhoun with two out in the sixth.
Oakland hosts Boston on Thursday before skipping town to start this series on Friday.
Houston Astros
The ‘Stros, meanwhile, finished their series in Texas on Wednesday with a shutout loss. They will have Thursday off before their home opener on Friday.
Houston is off to a sluggish start, though four games in Tampa Bay is about as difficult a start to the season as you can get. At least Carlos Correa is back. I’m just wondering if he’s fully healthy.

He hit in his third consecutive game on Wednesday, going 1-for-4 with a single. He’s got two doubles on the season but no long balls yet. It’s early, but that was his problem last season when he had the back issues: power. It’s strange to me that AJ Hinch is batting him fifth. You would think he’d be in the 2, 3, or 4 slot if he were completely healthy.
Correa is making $5 million this season before entering an arbitration season, unless Houston can lock him up before then and avoid it. It’s a key season for his career.
